Azenhas do Mar: Sintra's Clifftop Village

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Azenhas do Mar is one of the most photographed villages near Lisbon: white houses cascading down a cliff above the Atlantic, with a natural ocean pool at the bottom. It’s on the Sintra coast, a short drive from the palaces.

Quick answer: Azenhas do Mar is about 20 minutes from Sintra by car. Take the classic photo from the viewpoint on the road above the village, walk down to the ocean pool (best at mid to high tide in calm weather), and eat seafood at the restaurant by the pool. Combine it with Praia das Maçãs next door. See places to stay in Azenhas do Mar.

Things to do

  • The viewpoint: the classic view of the village tumbling down to the sea. See Sintra photo spots.
  • The ocean pool: a natural pool in the rocks, filled by the sea.
  • Seafood: the restaurant above the pool is popular, so book ahead in summer.
  • Praia das Maçãs: a sandy village beach a short walk away.

Getting there

  • Car: the easiest way. Parking is limited near the viewpoint.
  • Bus: local buses run from Sintra station to the coast.
  • Tram: the historic Sintra tram runs to Praia das Maçãs on some days. Check the current schedule.

Tips

  • Waves: the pool can be closed or dangerous in rough seas.
  • Sunset: a lovely time for photos.
