The Best Viewpoints in Porto

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Porto is a city of hills and river views, and its viewpoints (miradouros) are some of the most beautiful in Europe, especially at sunset when the light turns the Ribeira gold. Here are the best viewpoints in Porto, most of them free.

Quick answer: for the classic sunset, go to Serra do Pilar or the Jardim do Morro in Gaia. For a bird’s-eye view, climb Clérigos Tower (€10). Walk the top deck of the D. Luís I bridge, and enjoy free views from the cathedral terrace, Miradouro da Vitória and the Palácio de Cristal gardens.

Porto

The best viewpoints

Serra do Pilar (Gaia)

The terrace beside the monastery above the bridge, with the whole of Porto spread out in front of you. The best sunset spot in the city; get there early. (The monastery itself has been closed for renovation.)

Jardim do Morro (Gaia)

The park just below Serra do Pilar, with the same bridge-and-Ribeira view and a lively crowd at sunset. Reach it by metro line D, the cable car from the Gaia riverside, or on foot over the bridge.

Ponte D. Luís I top deck

Walk across the top level for dizzying views straight down to the river and both banks. Shared with the metro.

Clérigos Tower

Climb 240 steps to a 360° panorama over the rooftops (€10 with the museum). Night tickets are cheaper in season.

The cathedral terrace (Terreiro da Sé)

A free square in front of the cathedral with views over the old town to the river.

Miradouro da Vitória

A small viewpoint in the old Jewish quarter looking over rooftops to the cathedral and the river. Quiet and free.

Palácio de Cristal gardens

Terraced gardens with peacocks and views down the Douro towards the sea. Free and peaceful.

Passeio das Virtudes

A sloping terrace above the river where locals gather for sunset drinks.

From the water

The six bridges cruise (€18–20) shows the city from the river. See river cruises.

Tips

  • Light: Porto faces south over the river, so it’s best photographed from Gaia in the afternoon and at sunset.
  • Arrive early for sunset at Serra do Pilar and the Jardim do Morro.
  • Wear good shoes: every viewpoint involves a climb.
