Chiado and Bairro Alto: Cafes by Day, Street Party by Night
Chiado and Bairro Alto sit side by side on a hill above Lisbon’s Baixa, and they couldn’t be more different. Chiado is elegant: grand cafés, theatres, bookshops and boutiques. Bairro Alto is a quiet village by day and Lisbon’s biggest street party by night. Here’s how to enjoy both.
Quick answer: in Chiado, have a coffee at A Brasileira, see the roofless Carmo Convent, browse the oldest bookshop in the world (Bertrand, since 1732), and eat a pastel de nata at Manteigaria. At night, head up to Bairro Alto for cheap drinks in the street, and watch the sunset at São Pedro de Alcântara or Santa Catarina.

Chiado
- A Brasileira: a historic Art Deco café with a bronze statue of poet Fernando Pessoa outside.
- Carmo Convent: a Gothic church left roofless by the 1755 earthquake, with a small archaeology museum. Closed Sundays.
- Livraria Bertrand: recognised as the oldest operating bookshop in the world.
- Manteigaria: some of Lisbon’s best custard tarts. See the best pastel de nata.
- Rua Garrett and Rua do Carmo: shopping streets with old shopfronts.
- Theatres: the São Carlos opera house and São Luiz theatre.
- Getting up: the Santa Justa lift is closed in 2026, so walk up from the Baixa or take the metro to Baixa-Chiado.
Bairro Alto
- By day: a quiet grid of narrow lanes, laundry lines and tiny shops.
- By night: from about 10pm, the streets fill with people drinking outside dozens of tiny bars. Cheap, loud and fun, especially on weekends.
- Fado: amateur nights at Tasca do Chico and fado houses nearby. See fado in Lisbon.
- Viewpoints: São Pedro de Alcântara (the Glória funicular is closed, so walk up) and Santa Catarina. See the best viewpoints.
- Rooftop bars nearby, like Park. See Lisbon rooftop bars.
Nearby
- Príncipe Real: gardens, concept stores and restaurants, just uphill. See Príncipe Real.
- Cais do Sodré: Pink Street and the Time Out Market, downhill.
- Bica: the photogenic steep street of the (closed) Bica funicular.
Staying here
Chiado is one of the best areas to stay: central, elegant and walkable. Bairro Alto is fun but loud at night. See where to stay in Lisbon, Chiado stays or Bairro Alto stays.
