The Best Museums in Lisbon (2026)

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Lisbon has some excellent museums, from one of Europe’s finest private art collections to royal carriages, fado and cutting-edge architecture. A few big ones are closed for renovation in 2026, so here’s an up-to-date guide to the best museums in Lisbon.

Quick answer: don’t miss the Gulbenkian Museum (reopened in July 2026), the MAAT (€11), the National Coach Museum (€15), the Museu do Fado (€5) and the roofless Carmo Convent. Note: the National Tile Museum and the National Museum of Ancient Art are closed for renovation in 2026, so check before you go.

The best museums

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

A world-class collection spanning Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art, European paintings and Lalique jewellery, reopened in July 2026 after an 18-month renovation. Next door, the CAM (Modern Art Centre, €12) has a striking new building and gardens. Free on Sunday afternoons and for under-18s; closed Tuesdays.

MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology)

A wave-shaped building by the river in Belém with contemporary exhibitions, plus the old power station next door. €11; the roof walk is free. Closed Tuesdays.

National Coach Museum

Gilded royal carriages from the 17th to 19th centuries, one of the finest collections in the world. €15. Part of the old riding school is closed for works.

Museu do Fado

The story of Lisbon’s soulful music, in Alfama. €5. Closed Mondays. See fado in Lisbon.

Carmo Convent and Archaeological Museum

A Gothic church left roofless by the 1755 earthquake, with a small archaeology museum. Closed Sundays.

Jerónimos Monastery

Not strictly a museum, but its cloister (€18) is a highlight of any visit. Closed Mondays. See Belém.

Palácio Nacional da Ajuda

A royal palace with lavish 19th-century interiors (€15), much quieter than the big sights.

MUDE (Design and Fashion Museum)

Reopened in 2024 in a former bank on Rua Augusta.

Closed for renovation in 2026

  • Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum): closed for major works. See azulejos for other places to see tiles.
  • Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga: closed for renovation.

For kids

The Oceanário (from €25.50) and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento science centre (€11). See Parque das Nações.
