Portugal Public Holidays 2027

Planning a trip to Portugal in 2027? Public holidays affect opening hours, transport and prices, and some bring big celebrations. Here are Portugal’s national public holidays for 2027, plus the main local holidays in Lisbon and Porto.

Quick answer: Portugal has 13 national public holidays. In 2027, the moveable ones are Good Friday (26 March), Easter Sunday (28 March) and Corpus Christi (27 May). Lisbon also celebrates 13 June (Santo António) and Porto 24 June (São João). Carnival Tuesday (9 February) is widely observed, though it isn’t an official national holiday.

  • 1 January (Friday): New Year’s Day.
  • 26 March (Friday): Good Friday.
  • 28 March (Sunday): Easter Sunday.
  • 25 April (Sunday): Freedom Day, marking the 1974 Carnation Revolution.
  • 1 May (Saturday): Labour Day.
  • 27 May (Thursday): Corpus Christi.
  • 10 June (Thursday): Portugal Day (Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades).
  • 15 August (Sunday): Assumption Day.
  • 5 October (Tuesday): Republic Day.
  • 1 November (Monday): All Saints’ Day.
  • 1 December (Wednesday): Restoration of Independence.
  • 8 December (Wednesday): Immaculate Conception.
  • 25 December (Saturday): Christmas Day.

Local and optional holidays

  • Other towns have their own municipal holidays.
  • Madeira and the Azores have regional holidays (1 July and Whit Monday respectively).

What’s open?

  • Museums and monuments: many close on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December. Check before you go.
  • Shops: most supermarkets and malls open, but small shops may close.
  • Restaurants: most open, though some close on Christmas Day.
  • Transport: reduced timetables.

Tips

  • Long weekends: holidays near weekends mean busy roads, trains and hotels.
  • Book early for Easter, June festivals and Christmas.
