Queluz Palace: Portugal's Versailles
The Queluz National Palace is a pink rococo summer palace between Lisbon and Sintra, often called the Portuguese Versailles. It has gilded state rooms, a Hall of Mirrors-style throne room, and formal gardens with fountains and a tiled canal. It’s far quieter than the Sintra palaces.
Quick answer: Queluz is about 20 minutes from Lisbon by train (Sintra line to Queluz-Belas, then a 15-minute walk) or by car. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the palace and gardens. It works well as a stop on the way to or from Sintra. See Lisbon to Sintra.

About the palace
Built in the 18th century as a royal summer retreat, Queluz later became the official residence of the royal family. It was where Queen Maria I lived, and where Pedro, later the first Emperor of Brazil, was born and died.
What to see
- The Throne Room: a dazzling hall of mirrors, gilding and chandeliers.
- The Music Room and the Ambassadors’ Room.
- The Don Quixote Room: where Pedro I/IV was born and died.
- The gardens: formal parterres, statues, fountains and a canal lined with azulejos, where royals once went boating.
- Equestrian shows: the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art has performed at Queluz. Check current schedules.
Tips
- Combine with Sintra on the same train line.
- Quiet: a good choice when Sintra is packed.
