Things to Do in Portimao and Praia da Rocha

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Portimão is the Algarve’s second city: a working riverside town famous for grilled sardines, with the huge beach of Praia da Rocha on its doorstep, the rock formations of Três Irmãos, an award-winning museum and a world-class racing circuit. Here are the best things to do in Portimão.

Quick answer: spend a day on Praia da Rocha and explore the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, walk through the rock arches at Três Irmãos at low tide, eat grilled sardines by the river, visit the Museu de Portimão (€3), and take a cheap boat to Benagil or up the river to Silves. Racing fans: MotoGP comes in November 2026 and Formula 1 returns in 2027.

Beaches

  • Praia da Rocha: one of the Algarve’s biggest beaches, with golden sand, rock stacks and a lively promenade of bars and restaurants.
  • Fortaleza de Santa Catarina: a 17th-century fort at the end of the beach with views over the river mouth.
  • Três Irmãos (Alvor): rock formations, tunnels and arches. Go at low tide to walk through them.
  • Praia do Vau: a smaller, calmer beach between Rocha and Alvor.

Museu de Portimão

In a former sardine cannery on the riverfront, telling the story of the fishing and canning industry. An excellent, award-winning museum. €3 (€4 with the Alcalar prehistoric site); closed Mondays.

Grilled sardines

The riverside near the old bridge is famous for its fish restaurants grilling sardines outdoors. The Sardine Festival takes over the riverfront every August.

Motor racing

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in the hills north of Portimão, hosts the MotoGP Grand Prix of Portugal (20–22 November 2026), sports car and classic racing, and Formula 1 will return in 2027 and 2028. Book hotels early for race weekends.

Nearby

  • Alvor: a pretty fishing village with a long beach and a lagoon boardwalk.
  • Ferragudo: across the river, with colourful boats and fish restaurants.
  • Monchique: the mountains, 30 minutes inland.
