The Best Alentejo Hotels: Convents, Wine Estates and Rural Retreats
The Alentejo is where Portugal slows down: rolling plains of cork oaks and olive groves, whitewashed villages, big skies and some of the country’s best wine and food. It’s also home to some of Portugal’s most beautiful places to stay, from converted convents to wine estates and rural retreats. Here are the best Alentejo hotels.
Quick answer: in Évora, the Convento do Espinheiro (a 15th-century convent) or M’AR De AR Aqueduto (in the old town). In the countryside, São Lourenço do Barrocal near Monsaraz, Torre de Palma or L’AND Vineyards. For wine lovers, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova. On the coast, Craveiral Farmhouse. You’ll want a car.

- Summers are very hot (often 35–40°C), so a pool is essential from June to September. Spring and autumn are ideal.
- Eat and drink locally: black pork, migas, sheep’s cheese and Alentejo reds. See Portugal’s wine regions.
