The Algarve vs the Costa del Sol
The Algarve or Spain’s Costa del Sol? Both are sunny southern coasts with golf, beaches and resorts, and both have easy flights from most of Europe. But they feel quite different. Here’s how to decide.
Quick answer: choose the Algarve for dramatic cliffs, sea caves, golden coves and a generally calmer, less built-up feel, especially in the west and east. Choose the Costa del Sol for warmer Mediterranean water, bigger cities like Málaga, livelier nightlife and easy trips to Granada, Ronda and Seville.

Side by side
- Coastline: the Algarve has spectacular cliffs and coves. The Costa del Sol has long, more developed beaches.
- Sea: the Algarve faces the Atlantic, so it’s cooler. The Mediterranean is warmer.
- Development: both have busy resort areas, but the Algarve has more quiet stretches.
- Culture: the Costa del Sol is close to Andalusia’s great cities. The Algarve has charming towns like Tavira and Lagos, and Seville is within reach.
- Golf: both are top golf destinations. See Algarve golf courses.
