Portugal vs Spain: Which Should You Visit?
Portugal or Spain? Neighbours on the Iberian Peninsula, they share sunshine, beaches and great food, but they’re very different countries. Here’s an honest comparison from a family that lives in Portugal, to help you choose (or combine them).
Quick answer: choose Portugal for a smaller, easier, more relaxed trip with great value, two wonderful cities (Lisbon and Porto), the Algarve’s cliffs and seafood, wine and a laid-back pace. Choose Spain for more variety and big-city energy (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville), late nights and a huge range of regions. Best of both: combine Lisbon or the Algarve with Seville, about 2 hours from the Algarve.

Size and getting around
Portugal is small: you can drive from north to south in about 6 hours, and trains link Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve in about 3 hours each. Spain is much bigger, with fast high-speed trains. There’s still no direct train between Lisbon and Madrid, so most people fly or take the bus. See the Portugal train guide.
Cities
- Portugal: Lisbon (hills, viewpoints, fado) and Porto (river, port wine, tiles) are both compact and walkable. See Porto vs Lisbon.
- Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Granada and Valencia: more big-city choice and world-famous monuments.
Beaches
- Portugal: the Algarve’s golden cliffs and coves, and wild Atlantic surf beaches. The water is cooler. See the best beaches in Portugal.
- Spain: warm Mediterranean beaches and big resorts, plus islands like Mallorca and the Canaries.
Food and wine
- Portugal: seafood, bacalhau, pastel de nata, port, vinho verde and great-value wine. Meals start earlier than in Spain. See what to eat in Portugal.
- Spain: tapas culture, paella, jamón and late dinners (often after 9pm).
Cost
Portugal is generally a little cheaper, especially for eating out and wine, though Lisbon has become pricier. See how much a trip to Portugal costs.
Vibe
Portugal is calmer, more understated and gentle; Spain is louder, livelier and more party-focused. Both are very safe and welcoming. See is Portugal safe?
Combining both
- Algarve + Seville: about 2 hours from Faro by car or tour. See day trips from the Algarve.
- Porto + Galicia: Vigo and Santiago de Compostela are a short trip north.
- Lisbon + Madrid: best by plane.
- Remember: Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal.
