The Azores in Winter: Is It Worth Visiting?

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

The Azores in winter are mild, green and very quiet. Temperatures rarely drop below the low teens, the hot springs feel even better, and flights and hotels cost less. It’s also changeable, rainy and windy. Here’s what to expect from November to March and whether it’s worth going.

Quick answer: yes, if you like hot springs, hiking and empty landscapes, and don’t mind rain. Expect around 14 to 18°C by day, frequent showers, wind and fog in the hills. Focus on São Miguel, with Furnas hot pools, crater lakes on clear days and cosy restaurants. Whale watching continues on calmer days. Keep your plans flexible.

Azores

Weather

  • Mild: rarely cold at sea level, though cooler in the mountains.
  • Wet and windy: rain showers and storms, often with sunny spells in between.
  • Sea: too cool for most swimmers, around 16 to 17°C.

Things to do

  • Hot springs: Terra Nostra, Poça da Dona Beija and Caldeira Velha. See Furnas and Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha.
  • Crater lakes on clear days. See Sete Cidades.
  • Hiking: green and empty trails, though some may be muddy or closed.
  • Whale watching: sperm whales are resident, but trips depend on the sea. See whale watching in the Azores.
  • Food: cozido, local cheeses and tea from the Gorreana plantation.

Tips

  • Layers and a waterproof are essential.
  • Be flexible: check webcams and change plans for the weather.
  • Inter-island travel: flights can be disrupted by storms, so build in buffer days.
  • Prices: lower for flights and hotels outside the holidays.
