Sao Miguel Itinerary: 5 Days in the Azores

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

São Miguel is the biggest and most varied island in the Azores: crater lakes, steaming hot springs, tea plantations, black-sand beaches and whales offshore. It’s only about 2 hours’ flight from Lisbon, yet feels like another world. Here’s a 5-day plan that covers the highlights, with the bookings and practical tips you need for 2026.

Quick answer: hire a car and give it 4–5 days. Do Sete Cidades on day one, Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha (book online), a full day in Furnas for the hot springs and cozido stew, the free Gorreana tea plantation, and whale watching from Ponta Delgada. Always have a backup plan for the weather.

Green volcanic landscape

Before you go

  • Flights: about 2h15 from Lisbon, with direct flights from Porto and some European and North American cities too.
  • Car: strongly recommended. Buses exist but are slow and won’t reach most viewpoints. Book early for summer.
  • Weather: famously changeable. Check the live webcams (SpotAzores) before driving up to a crater lake. If it’s in the clouds, swap days.
  • Base: Ponta Delgada is easiest, or split your stay with a night or two in Furnas. Places to stay in Ponta Delgada · Furnas.

Day 1: Ponta Delgada and Sete Cidades

Explore Ponta Delgada’s black-and-white streets and city gates, then drive west to Sete Cidades, the twin blue and green lakes inside a huge crater. The classic view is from Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, a short walk from the free car park. Stop at the Vista do Rei viewpoint and the village by the lake. On the way back, the Ferraria hot springs let you swim in the sea where hot volcanic water mixes with the ocean, best at low tide (free, no lifeguards, and a spa next door).

Day 2: Whale watching and the south coast

Take a morning whale-watching trip from Ponta Delgada marina. The Azores are one of the best places in the world to see whales and dolphins, and many trips (about €70, 3 hours) offer a free repeat if you see nothing. See whale-watching trips. In the afternoon, visit the pretty town of Vila Franca do Campo and its islet, a flooded crater you can swim in during summer.

Day 3: Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha

Lagoa do Fogo (“fire lake”) is the wildest of the crater lakes, with a beach you can hike down to. In summer (roughly June to September) the mountain road is closed to private cars during the day, and a shuttle bus runs instead (about €5). Below, Caldeira Velha has warm pools under a waterfall in a fern-filled forest. Book online in advance (€10 with bathing, €3 to walk only), as numbers are limited and slots sell out.

Day 4: Furnas

A whole day in this steaming valley:

  • Cozido das Furnas: a meat and vegetable stew cooked for hours in pots buried in the volcanic ground at Lagoa das Furnas. Watch them lift the pots in the late morning, then eat it for lunch at a restaurant in the village (book ahead).
  • Terra Nostra Park: beautiful gardens with a huge, warm, iron-orange thermal pool (€17 for adults). Wear an old swimsuit, as the iron stains!
  • Poça da Dona Beija: a set of smaller hot pools, open into the evening. Book online in season.
  • The fumaroles: bubbling hot springs right in the village.

Day 5: The northeast

Visit the Gorreana tea plantation, Europe’s oldest, where the visit and tasting are free. Then drive the green northeast: the viewpoints of Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, and the waterfalls of Ribeira dos Caldeirões. Finish at Santa Bárbara or Mosteiros beaches for sunset.

Tips

  • Book ahead in summer: Caldeira Velha, Poça da Dona Beija, cozido lunches and car hire.
  • Bring layers and a rain jacket, even in July.
  • Swimsuit and an old towel for the hot springs.
  • Driving: roads are good but winding, with cows sometimes on them!
  • Try: local pineapples (grown in greenhouses), cheese from São Jorge, lapas (limpets) and the local gin and tea.
