Best Douro Valley Wine Tours From Porto
A day in the Douro Valley is one of the best things you can do in Portugal: terraced vineyards tumbling down to the river, port tastings at family quintas and a long lunch with a view. A tour is the easiest way to do it, because nobody has to drive after the tastings. Here’s how to pick the right one, and the tours our members rate most.
Quick answer: most first-timers love a full-day tour from Porto with two winery visits, lunch and a short river cruise (around 9–10 hours). Want fewer people? Pick a small-group (8 guests or fewer) or private tour. Only have an afternoon? Do a port cellar tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia instead.
How Douro tours work
- Pickup: most tours collect you from your hotel or a central meeting point in Porto between 8 and 9am, and you’re back around 6–7pm.
- The drive: it’s about 1h30–2h each way to Régua or Pinhão, the heart of the wine region, with viewpoint stops on the way.
- What’s usually included: two winery visits with tastings (port and Douro table wines), a traditional lunch with wine, and often a one-hour boat trip on the river.
- Book ahead from May to October, and especially during the grape harvest (mid-September to early October), the most beautiful and busiest time.

1. The classic: vineyards, lunch, cruise and tastings
The all-in-one day that most visitors book: two wine estates, port and olive oil tasting, a traditional Douro lunch and a relaxing cruise on the river. Easy, good value and a great first taste of the region.
2. Small-group tour (max 8 guests)
The same highlights, but in a minivan instead of a coach, so more time to chat with the guide and winemakers, and quieter tastings. Usually includes wine with lunch and a river cruise. Our pick if you want a more personal day without paying for a private tour.
3. Private tour with cruise and wine
Your own driver-guide and a flexible plan. Many private tours stop in the lovely riverside town of Amarante on the way, then visit Pinhão and its tiled train station, two wine estates and a boat trip. Great for couples, families and anyone who hates group schedules.
4. Douro day trip with cruise and tastings
A popular shared tour that heads to Peso da Régua, once the hub of the port wine trade, with tastings, a Portuguese lunch and time on the water looking up at the terraces.
5. 4x4 vineyard tour with picnic
For something a bit more adventurous: off-road tracks up through the vineyards to viewpoints the coaches can’t reach, a picnic lunch and winery tastings. Fun for groups of friends.
6. Already in the Douro? A winery tour and tasting
If you’re staying in the valley or driving yourself, book a cellar tour and premium port tasting at a riverside estate, such as Quinta do Tedo, where the Tedo meets the Douro. About 1h30.

Tour or on your own?

- Eat breakfast: tastings often start before lunch, and port is strong!
- Bring layers and sun cream. The valley is much hotter than Porto in summer (often 35°C or more) and cooler in the evenings.
