Best eSIM for Portugal: Do You Need One and How to Choose

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 1 October 2026

Landing in Portugal without mobile data is how most travel headaches start: no Uber, no maps, no booking confirmations. An eSIM fixes that before you even leave home. Here’s what you need to know, and when you don’t need one at all.

Quick answer: on an EU phone plan you probably don’t need anything, because EU roaming works in Portugal at no extra cost. Everyone else (UK, US, Canada, Australia, Brazil and beyond): buy a travel eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.

Do you even need an eSIM?

  • EU and EEA plans: “roam like at home” rules mean you can usually use your normal data allowance in Portugal. Check for a fair-use limit if you’re staying for weeks.
  • UK plans: since Brexit, many UK networks charge daily roaming fees again. Check yours. A week of fees can easily cost more than an eSIM.
  • US, Canada, Australia and others: roaming passes are usually expensive. A travel eSIM is almost always cheaper.

What is a travel eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card. You buy a data plan online, scan a QR code (or tap install in the app), and your phone gets a second line just for data. Your normal SIM stays in place, so you can still get texts and calls on your home number if you want them.

Most iPhones from the XS onwards, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, and many others support eSIM. Your phone also needs to be unlocked. If it came from a carrier on a contract, check first.

Portugal’s mobile networks

Portugal has four mobile networks: MEO, NOS, Vodafone and the newer DIGI. 4G covers almost all of the population and 5G is live in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve resorts and most towns. Travel eSIMs usually connect through MEO, NOS or Vodafone, and all three are reliable in cities. In remote areas, like mountain roads, parts of the Alentejo or boat trips, coverage can be patchier whichever network you’re on.

How to choose a Portugal eSIM

  • Data amount: for a week of maps, messaging, social media and ride apps, 5–10GB is plenty for most people. Video calls and streaming use a lot more.
  • Portugal-only or Europe-wide: visiting Spain too? A Europe plan saves buying two.
  • Which network it uses: good providers tell you. MEO, NOS or Vodafone are all fine.
  • Hotspot allowed? Useful if you want to share data with a laptop or a travel partner.
  • Top-ups: check you can add data from the app if you run out.
  • “Unlimited” plans: often slow down after a daily limit. Read the small print.

How to set it up (the stress-free way)

  1. Buy and install it at home while you’re on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly.
  2. Leave it switched off (or set its validity to start on first use) so you don’t burn days before the trip.
  3. When you land, turn on the eSIM line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Turn off data roaming on your home line to avoid surprise charges.

eSIM vs a local SIM card

You can still buy a prepaid SIM from MEO, NOS or Vodafone shops in the airport arrivals halls and city centres, and it can be good value for long stays. For a normal holiday, an eSIM wins on convenience: there’s no queue after a long flight, you’re online the second you land, and your home number keeps working.
