The Best Time to Visit Porto
Porto has a milder, wetter climate than Lisbon, with warm summers cooled by Atlantic breezes and rainy winters. Here’s the best time to visit Porto, and what to expect in each season.
Quick answer: the best time is May to June and September to early October, with warm days (around 20 to 25°C), less rain and a lively atmosphere. 23 June is the São João festival. September is harvest time in the Douro. Winter is cool and rainy but atmospheric and cheaper.

Season by season
Spring (March to May)
Mild, with rain gradually easing. Great for walking and the start of the outdoor terrace season.
Summer (June to August)
Warm and pleasant, usually in the mid-20s°C with occasional hotter days. It’s the busiest season. São João on 23 June is the highlight of the year. See São João.
Autumn (September to November)
September is lovely, with the grape harvest in the Douro. Rain returns in October and November. See the Douro day trip.
Winter (December to February)
Cool (around 13 to 15°C by day) and often rainy, but with cosy cafés, port cellars and low prices. See Porto in winter and Porto on a rainy day.
