The Best Time to Visit the Algarve

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

The Algarve is one of Europe’s sunniest regions, with hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit depends on whether you want hot beach days, quiet hiking weather or a winter escape. Here’s a season-by-season guide.

Quick answer: for beaches, go June to September, when the sea is warmest (around 20 to 23°C). For warm weather without the crowds, go in May or late September to October. For hiking and golf, October to April is ideal. Winter is mild (around 16°C by day), sunny and quiet, but too cold for most swimmers.

Algarve

Season by season

Spring (March to May)

Wildflowers on the cliffs, warm days and quiet beaches. The sea is still cool. Perfect for hiking. See Algarve hikes.

Summer (June to August)

Hot and dry, often around 28 to 30°C or more. Beaches, boat trips and nightlife are in full swing, but it’s busy and expensive, especially in August. See the Algarve in summer.

Autumn (September to November)

September has the warmest sea and fewer families. October is still pleasant. November brings some rain.

Winter (December to February)

Mild and often sunny, with very few crowds and low prices. Great for golf, walking and long-stay visitors. See the Algarve in winter.
