Braganca: Medieval Citadel and Montesinho

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Bragança, in Portugal’s remote northeast, is crowned by one of the country’s best-preserved medieval citadels: a walled village with a castle keep and a rare civic building from the Romanesque era. It’s the gateway to the wild Montesinho Natural Park and the traditions of Trás-os-Montes.

Quick answer: Bragança is about 2.5 hours from Porto by car. Explore the walled citadel and castle, see the Domus Municipalis, visit the Iberian Mask museum, and head into the Montesinho Natural Park for stone villages and hiking. Try the hearty local food, including smoked sausages. See places to stay in Bragança.
