Corvo: The Smallest Island in the Azores
Corvo is the smallest and most remote island in the Azores: a single extinct volcano with one village of a few hundred people, at the far western edge of Europe. Its crater, the Caldeirão, is a spectacular green bowl with lakes and islets. It’s usually visited on a day trip from neighbouring Flores.
Quick answer: take a boat from Flores (weather permitting) or a short flight. In the village, arrange a taxi or minibus up to the Caldeirão crater, walk down to the lakes, and walk back down to the harbour or get a ride. It’s a top spot for birdwatching in autumn.

Things to do
- The Caldeirão: the volcanic crater with lakes and small islands, often wreathed in cloud. A trail descends to the crater floor.
- Vila do Corvo: the only village, with narrow lanes, stone houses and traditional wooden locks.
- Birdwatching: rare migrant birds from America turn up in autumn, attracting birders from around the world.
- The coast: boat trips around the island and to Flores pass sea caves and waterfalls.
Getting there
- Boat from Flores: trips from Santa Cruz das Flores, often combined with a coastal tour. They depend on sea conditions.
- Flights: limited, via Flores or Horta.
See Flores and Azores island hopping.
Tips
- Weather: crossings are cancelled in rough seas, so keep your plans flexible.
- Fog: the crater can be hidden in cloud. Check the weather before the climb.
- Stay over: there are a few rooms in the village, if you want to experience the quiet.
