Evoramonte: Hilltop Castle with Alentejo Views

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Évoramonte is a tiny walled village on a hilltop between Évora and Estremoz, crowned by an unusual castle keep with four rounded towers and stone knots carved around it. The views over the Alentejo plains are some of the best in the region.

Quick answer: Évoramonte is about 30 minutes from Évora and 15 minutes from Estremoz. Climb to the castle keep for the views, walk the single main street inside the walls, and see the house where the 1834 peace convention ending Portugal’s civil war was signed. It’s a short, rewarding stop.

Things to do

  • The castle keep: a distinctive Renaissance-era tower with rounded corner towers, rebuilt after an earthquake.
  • The views: rolling plains, cork oaks and olive groves in every direction.
  • The village: a handful of whitewashed houses and a church inside the walls.
  • History: the Convention of Évoramonte (1834) ended the Liberal Wars.
