Fado in Porto: Where to Hear It
Fado is usually associated with Lisbon, but Porto has its own intimate fado scene, with small houses in the old town where you can hear the soulful Portuguese song over dinner or a glass of port. Here’s how to experience fado in Porto.
Quick answer: book a fado show in the historic centre or Ribeira, either a short concert with a port tasting or a dinner-and-fado evening. Shows are intimate, so stay quiet during the songs. See fado shows in Porto.

What is fado?
Fado is a melancholic style of song, often about longing, love and the sea, accompanied by the Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar. It’s recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Types of fado experience
- Concert with port: a short show of about an hour, often including a glass of port. Ideal if you’re short on time.
- Dinner and fado: a traditional meal with fado between courses.
- Fado bars: informal venues where locals sing.
Etiquette
- Silence: no talking during the songs.
- Arrive on time: doors may close during performances.
- Photos: ask before filming, and never use flash.
Fado in Lisbon and Coimbra
Lisbon is the home of fado, and Coimbra has its own style, sung by men in student capes. See fado in Lisbon and Coimbra.
