Figueira da Foz: Huge Beaches Near Coimbra

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Figueira da Foz is a classic Portuguese seaside resort at the mouth of the Mondego river, with one of the widest beaches in Europe, a casino, a long promenade and the green hills of Serra da Boa Viagem just north. It’s popular with Portuguese families, and close to Coimbra.

Quick answer: Figueira is about 45 minutes west of Coimbra and 2 hours from Lisbon or Porto. Enjoy the huge Praia da Claridade, walk the promenade, drive to the viewpoints of Serra da Boa Viagem, and surf at Buarcos and Cabedelo. See places to stay in Figueira da Foz.
