Camping in Portugal: Campsites and Rules

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Camping is a popular, affordable way to see Portugal, with campsites near beaches, in national parks and close to cities. Here’s what you need to know about camping in Portugal, including the rules on wild camping.

Quick answer: stay at official campsites (parques de campismo), which are plentiful along the coast and in natural parks, and usually have pools, shops and cafés. Wild camping is not allowed in most places, especially in protected areas and on beaches, and fines apply. Book ahead for summer and coastal sites.
