Is Evora Worth Visiting? An Honest Answer
Is Évora worth visiting? Yes. The walled capital of the Alentejo is one of Portugal’s most complete historic towns, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a Roman temple, the eerie Chapel of Bones, a hilltop cathedral and excellent food and wine. Here’s an honest look.
Quick answer: yes, as a day trip from Lisbon (about 1.5 hours) or better, an overnight stay. It’s compact, so one full day covers the highlights. The downsides are extreme summer heat and a quieter atmosphere in the evenings.

Why it’s worth it
- History: Roman, medieval and Renaissance sights within the walls.
- The Chapel of Bones: see the Chapel of Bones.
- Food and wine: see Alentejo food.
- The region: megaliths, Monsaraz and wineries nearby. See Monsaraz.
The downsides
- Heat: July and August often go well above 35°C.
- Small: one day is enough for the town itself.
