Paiva Walkways and 516 Arouca Bridge

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

The Paiva Walkways (Passadiços do Paiva) follow a wild river gorge through the Arouca Geopark on a wooden boardwalk, past rapids, river beaches and quartzite cliffs. Above them hangs 516 Arouca, one of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges. Together they make one of northern Portugal’s best days out.

Quick answer: the walkway is about 8.7km one way, between Areinho and Espiunca, about an hour’s drive from Porto. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours. Book tickets online, with a separate timed slot for the 516 Arouca bridge. The Areinho end has a long staircase, so many people start there and walk down it. Arrange a taxi back to your car. See tours from Porto.

River gorge

The walkways

  • The route: a boardwalk hugging the riverbank, with lots of steps in places.
  • The scenery: rapids, waterfalls, forested slopes and geological formations.
  • River beaches: stops for a swim in summer.
  • Difficulty: moderate, mainly because of the staircases.

516 Arouca bridge

The suspension bridge is 516 metres long and hangs high above the river near the Areinho end. Crossing it is a thrilling experience. It’s a guided crossing in timed groups, so book in advance.

Getting there

  • Car: the easiest option. Park at one end and take a taxi back (taxis wait at the ends in busy periods).
  • Tour: day trips from Porto include transport, tickets and the bridge.

Tips

  • Book ahead, especially at weekends and in summer.
  • Weather: the walkway may close after heavy rain or in extreme heat.
  • Bring: water, sun protection, good shoes and a swimsuit in summer.
  • Arouca: visit the monastery and try the local sweets. See places to stay in Arouca.
