Miragaia, Porto: The Quiet Riverside Quarter
Miragaia is Ribeira’s quieter neighbour, a riverside quarter of colourful houses, stairways and old churches just west of the main tourist strip. It’s where tram 1 starts its run to the sea, and it’s a lovely place to wander away from the crowds.
Quick answer: walk west from Ribeira along the river to Miragaia. See the colourful houses and the São Pedro de Miragaia church, visit the Alfândega (old customs house), then catch tram 1 to Foz. Climb the steps up to the Virtudes garden for sunset views. See places to stay in Miragaia.

Things to do
- The riverside: brightly painted houses and quiet terraces.
- Igreja de São Pedro de Miragaia: a church with a tiled façade.
- The Alfândega: the huge 19th-century customs house, now a congress centre and museum.
- Tram 1: the historic tram along the Douro to Foz. See Foz do Douro.
- Jardim das Virtudes: a terraced garden above Miragaia, a popular sunset spot. See the best Porto viewpoints.
- The Muralha Fernandina: stretches of the old city wall.
Stay here?
Miragaia is close to Ribeira but calmer, with river views. Expect steep streets and steps. See where to stay in Porto and Porto hotels with a view.
