Parking in Porto: Street Zones, Car Parks and Tips

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Updated 8 October 2026

If you arrive in Porto with a car, or pick one up for the Douro, you need somewhere to leave it. Here’s how the street zones work, what the main car parks charge in 2026, and where to park free by the metro.

Quick answer: street parking costs €0.40 to €1.20 an hour, charged on weekdays from 9am to 7pm (plus Saturdays 11am to 4pm in the centre) and free on Sundays. Pay with cash or the Telpark or Via Verde app. Council car parks such as Trindade charge €1.20 an hour, or park free at Senhora da Hora metro station and ride in.

Do you need a car in Porto?

Not for the city. The old centre drops steeply to the river, the lanes are narrow and often one-way, and the metro and buses reach the sights. A car earns its keep for day trips to the Douro or the Minho.

  • Restricted zones: the Ribeira, Rua das Flores, Cedofeita, Carmelitas and Santa Catarina are controlled-access zones open only to registered vehicles.
  • The Dom Luís I bridge: the lower deck has been closed to private cars since 2023, and the top deck carries only the metro and pedestrians. Cross to Gaia on the Arrábida or Infante bridge.
  • Bus lanes: since 2025, STCP bus inspectors can book cars in bus lanes and at stops.

Paid street parking: zones and prices

Paid streets are split into four zones, run mostly by the concession company EPorto. Look for the blue signs and parking machines; the sign shows the maximum stay.

ZoneAreaPer hourMaximum stay
IHistoric centre, Baixa, Ribeira€1.202 hours
IIRing around the centre€0.602 to 10 hours, as signed
III and IVOuter neighbourhoods€0.402 to 10 hours, as signed
  • When you pay: weekdays 9am to 7pm in every zone, plus Saturdays 11am to 4pm in Zone I. Evenings, Sundays and public holidays are free.
  • Machines: take cash, so carry coins. If you get a paper ticket, leave it on the dashboard.
  • Apps: the council accepts Telpark and Via Verde.
  • Avoid: resident-only bays, loading bays (cargas e descargas), yellow kerb lines, pavements and bus stops.

Notices, fines and towing

Don’t pay, or overstay, and an attendant leaves a notice (aviso) asking for the zone’s 10-hour rate: €12 in Zone I, €6 in Zone II and €4 further out, minus anything you paid. Pay by the deadline on it, or you risk a fine of €30 to €150 under the Highway Code.

  • Towing: cars in bus lanes, loading bays or on pavements can be clamped or towed, with removal and storage fees on top of the fine.
  • Car gone? Text “Reboque”, a space and the number plate to 3838. The free reply gives the pound’s address and hours. Bring your licence, passport and the car’s papers, and call your rental company.
  • Hire cars: unpaid fines reach the rental company, which adds an admin fee.

Central car parks

For longer stays, use a car park. These are the operators’ posted 2026 prices; all open 24 hours.

Car parkAreaFirst hourAfter that
Trindade (STCP Serviços)Trindade, Aliados€1.20€1.20 an hour

Praça D. João I (Telpark)Baixa€2.95€27 daily maximum
Cardosas (Saba)São Bento€2.55Day passes online
Alfândega (STCP Serviços)Riverside, west of the Ribeira€1€1.20 an hour
  • Staying a few days? Trindade, Poveiros, Silo Auto and Alfândega sell 48-hour (€35) and 72-hour (€50) tickets, subject to availability; activate one within 10 minutes of driving in. Otherwise 24 hours costs about €29.
  • For the Ribeira: Alfândega is closest, but the council plans to remove it, so check first. The climb back is steep, and the Guindais funicular has been suspended since July 2026. See the Ribeira.
  • Height limits: Praça D. João I takes vehicles up to 1.90m and Saba’s car parks about 2.1m.

Park and ride by the metro

Metro do Porto says all its station car parks are free and open 24 hours, except Botica and Estádio do Dragão. A 24-hour Andante Tour ticket (about €7.75) covers unlimited rides. See Porto public transport.

  • Senhora da Hora: free, on the shared track into Trindade, so trains are frequent. Custóias, ISMAI and Fânzeres are free too.
  • Estádio do Dragão (Telpark): 850 spaces, but occasional users now pay €2 an hour and up to €20 a day. The cheap park-and-ride rate needs a monthly Andante pass.
  • Botica (Telpark): by the airport on line E, €1.20 for the first hour and no more than €3.50 a day.

Parking in Gaia for the port cellars

Gaia’s riverside is short of spaces. Bollards went up in its historic centre in early 2026, and the council has tendered for number-plate cameras to control access. It’s easier to park on the Porto side and walk over the bridge’s lower deck, about 10 minutes from the Ribeira.

  • Saba Beira-Rio: a small car park near the cellars, about €2.20 for the first hour, 2.1m headroom.
  • Tasting port? The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g/l, so leave the car. See the best port cellars in Gaia.

Hotel parking

Few hotels in the old centre have a garage. Those offering parking usually charge extra per night, on top of the €3-a-night tourist tax. Book it with the room, and compare it with a 72-hour council ticket. See where to stay in Porto.

Hire cars and day trips

See Porto on foot and by metro, then rent a car only for the days you leave the city.

  • Airport pick-up: the main firms have desks at the airport, about 15km north and close to the motorways, so you avoid the old town.
  • The Douro: about 1.5 to 2 hours to Régua or Pinhão on the A4 and A24, tolled as far as Amarante. See the Douro by car and a Douro day trip.

Renting only for day trips? Compare airport and city pick-ups on Discover Cars, which searches international and local firms at once. Book early for an automatic.
