Vila Nova de Gaia: Port Lodges and the Best Views of Porto
Vila Nova de Gaia is the city across the Douro from Porto, and it’s where port wine has been aged for centuries. Its riverside is lined with the famous port lodges, and its hilltops have the best views of Porto. Here’s what to do in Gaia.
Quick answer: walk across the D. Luís I bridge from the Ribeira, tour a port lodge (from about €15–40), stroll the riverside, ride the Gaia cable car up to the Jardim do Morro, watch the sunset from Serra do Pilar, and explore the museums and restaurants at WOW.

Port lodges
The riverside is lined with historic port houses where the wine was brought down the Douro to age. Most offer cellar tours with tastings, from about €15 to €40 depending on the wines. Big names include Graham’s, Taylor’s, Sandeman, Cálem, Cockburn’s and Ferreira. Book ahead in summer. See port tastings or read the port wine guide.
Things to do
- The riverside (Cais de Gaia): rabelo boats, restaurants and the best view of the Ribeira.
- Teleférico de Gaia: a short cable car ride from the riverside up to the Jardim do Morro.
- Jardim do Morro and Serra do Pilar: the classic sunset viewpoints over Porto. The Serra do Pilar monastery has been closed for renovation, but the terrace is open.
- WOW (World of Wine): a cultural quarter in old lodges, with museums (including the Chocolate Story), wine school, shops and restaurants with river terraces.
- River cruises: many leave from the Gaia side. See cruises.
Getting there
- Walk: cross the lower deck of the D. Luís I bridge from the Ribeira, or the top deck from the upper town.
- Metro: line D crosses the top deck to Jardim do Morro.
