Porto Moniz Natural Pools, Madeira
At Madeira’s northwest tip, the Atlantic crashes into black volcanic rock, filling natural lava pools with clear seawater. The pools of Porto Moniz are one of the island’s best sights, and a highlight of any west-coast road trip. Here’s how to visit.
Quick answer: Porto Moniz is about 1.5 hours’ drive from Funchal. There are two sets of pools: the main swimming complex (small fee, with changing rooms, lifeguards and a café) and free natural pools nearby. Go on a calm, sunny day in summer or early autumn. Combine with Seixal, the Fanal forest and Cabo Girão. See west Madeira tours.

The pools
- The swimming complex: volcanic pools with walkways, sunbeds, toilets and lifeguards in season.
- The natural pools: a short walk away, with fewer facilities. They’re free and wilder.
- Water: it’s seawater refreshed by the waves, so it’s cool even in summer.
Around Porto Moniz
- Seixal: a black-sand beach under green cliffs, plus more natural pools.
- Fanal: a misty laurel forest with ancient twisted trees, a UNESCO-listed habitat.
- The north coast road: waterfalls and cliffs between Porto Moniz and São Vicente.
- Cabo Girão: the glass skywalk on the way from Funchal.
Tips
- Rough seas: the pools may close when waves are high. Check before you go.
- Bring: water shoes, a towel and a layer, as the north coast is cooler and cloudier.
- Driving: mountain roads are winding and steep, so allow plenty of time.
- Tour: a west-island tour is easiest without a car. See the best Madeira tours.
