Sesimbra Day Trip from Lisbon: Beaches, Castle and Cabo Espichel

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Sesimbra is a fishing town in a sheltered bay south of Lisbon, with calm turquoise water, a Moorish castle on the hill, superb grilled fish and wild cliffs at Cabo Espichel. It’s popular with Lisboetas but still feels local, and it’s perfect for a beach day trip from the capital.

Quick answer: drive about 45 minutes from Lisbon, or take the Carris Metropolitana bus 3721 from Sete Rios (about 1h). Swim at the Blue Flag beaches of Ouro and Califórnia, climb to the free castle, eat grilled fish on the waterfront, and see the cliffs and dinosaur footprints at Cabo Espichel. Kayak to sea caves in summer.

Coast south of Lisbon

Getting there

  • Car: about 45 minutes from Lisbon over the 25 de Abril bridge.
  • Bus: Carris Metropolitana line 3721 from Sete Rios (stop on Av. das Forças Armadas) to Sesimbra, about 1h07, roughly hourly. In summer, special beach buses also run.
  • Tour: some Arrábida tours stop in Sesimbra. See Setúbal and Arrábida.

Things to do

The beaches

Praia do Ouro and Praia da Califórnia sit either side of the fort in the centre of town, with calm, clear water sheltered by the Arrábida hills. Both have Blue Flags in 2026. Further afield, Meco has a long, wild beach.

Sesimbra Castle

A Moorish castle high above the town, with walls to walk, a little church and huge views over the bay. Free entry.

Cabo Espichel

A dramatic headland 20 minutes away, with an 18th-century sanctuary, a lighthouse and sheer cliffs. Dinosaur footprints are preserved in the rocks at Pedra da Mua; legend says they’re the tracks of the Virgin Mary’s giant mule.

Kayaking and sea caves

Guided kayak tours explore the caves and coves of the Arrábida coast (about 3 hours, around €35–45). See kayak tours.

Lagoa de Albufeira

A lagoon near Sesimbra popular for kitesurfing and paddling, with a beach on the ocean side. Check local notices, as swimming in the inner lagoon has been restricted.

Eat grilled fish

Sesimbra is famous for its fish, especially swordfish and the local catch, grilled over charcoal along the waterfront Avenida dos Náufragos and by the fishing harbour. Fish is sold by weight, so ask the price first. Look out for long-running family restaurants like Ribamar, and Lobo do Mar by the harbour.

Where to stay

  • Sesimbra Oceanfront Hotel: a refurbished seafront hotel with a spa, on Praça da Califórnia.
  • Hotel do Mar: a 1960s classic on the hillside, with three pools and a sea-view terrace for every room.
  • SANA Sesimbra: on the beachfront avenue, with a rooftop hot tub.

Tips

  • Summer weekends are busy with Lisboetas, so arrive early.
  • Parking in the centre is limited; use the car parks above town.
  • Combine with Arrábida’s beaches and Azeitão wineries for a full day.
