Where to Stay in the Douro Valley

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Staying in the Douro Valley, rather than visiting on a day trip from Porto, lets you wake up to terraced vineyards, take tastings at your own pace and watch the sunset over the river. Here’s where to stay, from riverside towns to wine estates.

Quick answer: stay in Pinhão for the heart of the wine country and the river, Peso da Régua for convenience and trains, or the Lamego side for luxury and spa resorts. Best of all is a quinta (wine estate) in the vineyards. Spend at least two nights. See places to stay in the Douro.

Douro Valley

The best areas

Pinhão

The heart of the Douro, with famous quintas all around, river boats and the tiled station. Try The Vintage House on the river, or quinta stays at Quinta Nova and Quinta de la Rosa. See Pinhão.

Peso da Régua

The main town, with trains from Porto and the Douro Museum. Try Quinta do Vallado just outside town. See Peso da Régua.

Lamego and the south bank

Luxury and spa resorts in the hills. Try Six Senses Douro Valley, Pacheca The Wine House (sleep in a wine barrel) or Delfim Douro Hotel. See Lamego.

The upper Douro

Wilder and more remote, near the Côa Valley rock art. Try Casa do Rio.

Closer to Porto

For a shorter drive, Douro41 sits above the river near Castelo de Paiva.

Tips

  • Car or tours: quintas are spread out, so you’ll need a car, taxis or organised tastings. Don’t drink and drive.
  • Harvest: September is magical but busy, so book early.
  • Winter: quiet and cheaper. See the Douro in winter.
