The Best Douro Valley Hotels and Wine Estates
Staying in the Douro Valley is the best way to experience it: waking up to mist over the terraced vineyards, tasting wine where it’s made, and watching the sun set over the river after the day-trippers leave. Here are the best Douro Valley hotels and wine estates (quintas) to stay at, from luxury retreats to family-run estates.
Quick answer: for luxury, Six Senses Douro Valley. For a classic riverside stay in Pinhão, The Vintage House or Quinta de la Rosa. To sleep in a giant wine barrel, Pacheca. For wine lovers, Quinta do Vallado or Quinta Nova. Base yourself around Pinhão for the most beautiful scenery, and book ahead for the harvest (September and early October).

Where to stay in the Douro
- Pinhão: the heart of the valley, with the tiled station, river cruises and quintas all around. The most scenic base, and reachable by train from Porto.
- Peso da Régua and Lamego: bigger towns with more restaurants and services, at the western end of the valley.
- Further east (Foz Côa): wilder and quieter, with prehistoric rock art nearby.

Tips
- Book early for the harvest (mid-September to early October) and summer weekends.
- Getting there: the scenic train from Porto to Pinhão, or a car. Many quintas are up steep, narrow roads, so drive carefully. See the Douro Valley without a tour.
- Dinner: rural quintas can be far from restaurants, so check whether yours serves dinner.
- Summer heat: the valley can top 35°C, so a pool is worth having.
- Don’t drink and drive between tastings. Book a wine tour or a local driver.
