Things to Do in Carvoeiro and Lagoa

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Carvoeiro is a small fishing village in a cove, surrounded by cliffs, coves and sea caves, and it’s one of the best bases in the Algarve. Benagil and Praia da Marinha are minutes away, and there’s a cliff-top boardwalk right from the village. Here are the best things to do in Carvoeiro and around Lagoa.

Quick answer: walk the boardwalk to Algar Seco, swim at Carvoeiro beach and Praia do Carvalho (through a tunnel in the rock), take a kayak or boat to Benagil, hike the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, visit Slide & Splash (from €27, open until 31 October) and the SandCity sand-sculpture park, and taste wine among sculptures at Quinta dos Vales.

In Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro beach and village

A small sandy beach in the middle of the village, framed by colourful houses on the cliffs. Fishing boats still pull up on the sand.

The boardwalk and Algar Seco

A wooden boardwalk runs along the clifftops east of the village to Algar Seco, a maze of rock formations, pools and a natural “window” over the sea. Beautiful at sunset.

Praia do Carvalho

A hidden cove reached through a tunnel carved in the rock, near the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.

Benagil and the Seven Hanging Valleys

  • Benagil Cave: about 10 minutes away. Visit by licensed boat or guided kayak or paddleboard only. See kayak tours or read Benagil Cave.
  • Seven Hanging Valleys trail: about 5.7km each way between Praia da Marinha and the Vale Centeanes lighthouse, with spectacular clifftop views. Start early.
  • Praia da Marinha: one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, a short drive away.

Around Lagoa

  • Slide & Splash: the Algarve’s classic water park, celebrating 40 years in 2026. From €27 for adults and €19.80 for children aged 5–10. See tickets.
  • SandCity: a huge sand-sculpture park on the EN125 in Lagoa, with over 100 sculptures. See tickets.
  • Quinta dos Vales: a winery near Estômbar with sculptures in its grounds (free to walk) and wine-and-art tours (about €36).
  • Porches pottery: hand-painted Algarve ceramics.
  • Ferragudo: a pretty fishing village 10 minutes away. See the best Algarve villages.

Where to stay

Carvoeiro is a great central base for families and couples. See family resorts (including Tivoli Carvoeiro) or browse Carvoeiro stays.

Tips

  • The village is hilly and parking is tight in summer.
  • Go early to Marinha and Benagil to avoid crowds and full car parks.
