The Most Instagrammable Spots in the Algarve

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

Golden cliffs, sea arches, hidden coves and turquoise water: the Algarve might be the most photogenic coast in Europe. Here are the best photo spots from Lagos to Tavira, plus the rules and safety tips that matter in 2026, because a few famous spots have changed.

Quick answer: the top shots are Benagil Cave (by licensed boat or guided kayak only), Praia da Marinha and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, Ponta da Piedade at sunrise, Algar Seco in Carvoeiro, the Três Irmãos rocks at low tide and the red cliffs of Falésia at sunset. Note: the famous Praia do Camilo stairs are closed after a cliff collapse.

Algarve cliffs and sea

Lagos and the west

1. Ponta da Piedade

Golden rock stacks, arches and grottos with a lighthouse on top. Walk the clifftop paths for views from above, or see the grottos from the water. Tip: sunrise from the top, or a morning boat or kayak trip when the water is calm.

2. Praia do Camilo (from above)

The wooden staircase down to this cove was one of the Algarve’s most famous photos, but land access has been closed after a cliff collapse. You can still photograph it from the clifftop path nearby, and see it from boats.

3. Cape St Vincent and Sagres

The lighthouse at the southwest tip of Europe, with 60-metre cliffs. Tip: sunset is spectacular, but very busy and windy.

Portimão to Carvoeiro

4. Praia dos Três Irmãos

Rock formations, tunnels and arches between Alvor and Portimão, including the “Diamond” rock. Tip: go at low tide so you can walk through the passages.

5. Ferragudo

A whitewashed fishing village across the river from Portimão, with colourful boats and a little castle by the beach.

6. Algar Seco

Wild rock formations, pools and a natural “window” in the rock, just east of Carvoeiro, reached by wooden steps. Tip: late afternoon, and frame the sea through the window.

7. Carvoeiro boardwalk

The clifftop boardwalk from the town to Algar Seco, with sea views the whole way.

Benagil and Marinha

8. Benagil Cave

The cave with a hole in its roof and a beach inside, the Algarve’s most famous photo. The rules changed in 2024: no landing on the cave beach, no swimming in, and kayaks and paddleboards are only allowed on licensed guided tours. Boats can enter briefly. Tip: morning light through the roof hole is the classic shot. See Benagil boat tours or read our Benagil guide.

9. Benagil from above

Walk up from Benagil beach to the clifftop and look down into the cave through the hole in the roof. Stay behind the barriers.

10. Praia da Marinha

Often called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with the “M” rock arch and stacks. Tip: shoot from the clifftop path in the morning, then go down for a swim.

11. Seven Hanging Valleys trail

About 11.5km return along the clifftops from Praia da Marinha to Vale Centeanes lighthouse, past Benagil and sea arches. Start early: the Marinha car park fills by late morning. Take water and avoid the midday heat.

12. Albandeira Arch

A natural arch at Praia da Albandeira, just west of Marinha. Quieter and just as beautiful.

Albufeira and the east

13. Praia da Falésia

Kilometres of beach under red, orange and white cliffs and green pines. Tip: golden hour, when the cliffs glow.

14. Albufeira old town and the beach lift

Whitewashed streets above Penéco beach, and the lift down to the sand.

15. Tavira

The old bridge over the Gilão river, hipped roofs and church towers. See Tavira and the eastern Algarve.

16. Ria Formosa flamingos

Flamingos in the salt pans and lagoons, especially around Tavira, Castro Marim and Faro. Bring a zoom lens. See Ria Formosa boat trips.

17. Ilha Deserta

An almost empty island beach off Faro, reached by boat, with long boardwalks over the dunes.

Inland

18. Silves castle

A red sandstone Moorish castle above a pretty river town. Lovely at sunset.

19. Fóia, Monchique

The highest point in the Algarve (902m), with views to the coast on a clear day.

Safety first

  • Stay away from cliff edges and out from under cliffs. Algarve cliffs collapse regularly, sometimes with no warning, as Praia do Camilo shows. Respect the barriers and signs.
  • Check tides before walking around rocks.
  • Drones: restricted in many areas, including near Faro airport. Check the rules first.
