Benagil Cave in 2026: How to Visit Legally (New Rules Explained)

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 1 October 2026

Benagil Cave, the huge sea cave with a hole in its roof and a hidden beach inside, is the Algarve’s most famous sight. But the rules changed in 2024, and many older guides and videos are now out of date. Here’s how to visit Benagil legally in 2026, and what to expect.

Quick answer: you can only visit the cave on a licensed tour, by boat, guided kayak or guided paddleboard. Nobody can land on the beach inside the cave any more, and swimming to the cave is banned. Book a tour, stay in the boat or on your board, and enjoy the view.

The Benagil rules (since August 2024)

  • No landing: stepping onto the sand inside the cave is prohibited for everyone, including tour groups.
  • No swimming to the cave from Benagil beach or anywhere else. Boat traffic and currents made it dangerous.
  • No solo kayaks or paddleboards. Paddling visits must be part of an official guided tour.
  • Time and number limits: the number of boats and kayaks inside the cave and the time they can spend there are capped.

The maritime police patrol the area and fines can be steep. Rules can change, so check with your tour operator before you go.

How to visit: boat or kayak?

Boat tour

The easiest option, and best with children or anyone who doesn’t want to paddle. Short trips leave from Benagil beach itself. Longer tours, which also take in other caves and rock arches along the coast, run from Portimão, Carvoeiro, Armacão de Pêra, Albufeira and Lagos. Boats go into the cave for a few minutes so you can see the famous “oculus” in the roof.

Guided kayak or paddleboard tour

More adventurous and quieter, and you get closer to the smaller caves the boats can’t reach. Tours usually start from Benagil or nearby beaches, with a guide for every small group. You’ll need to be reasonably fit, and the sea needs to be calm.

Browse Benagil boat and kayak tours.

Best time to go

  • Early morning for calmer seas, softer light and fewer boats.
  • Around midday if you want the sunbeam through the hole in the roof lighting up the beach.
  • May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm, but less crowded than July and August.
  • Tours are cancelled when the sea is rough, often more in spring and autumn, so don’t leave it to your last day.

See it from the top

You can also see the cave from above, for free. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) runs along the clifftops from Praia da Marinha to beyond Benagil and passes right by the hole in the cave’s roof. Stay behind the fences: the cliff edges are fragile.

Tips from our groups

  • Book ahead in summer, especially for small kayak groups.
  • Parking at Benagil is tiny. Arrive early, or start from a bigger town and take a longer boat tour instead.
  • Bring a dry bag for your phone on kayak tours.
  • Ignore anyone offering to rent you a kayak to “go in on your own”. It’s not allowed.
