Faro Airport to Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos: Every Option

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 1 October 2026

Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, but unlike Lisbon and Porto there’s no metro, and most visitors aren’t staying in Faro itself. Here’s how to get from the airport to Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos and the rest of the coast.

Quick answer: for most families and groups, a pre-booked transfer or hire car is the easiest way. In summer, the Aerobus is a good budget option to Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos. Uber/Bolt work too, and are best value for shorter hops like Faro, Quarteira or Vilamoura.

Rough prices from Faro airport

Prices checked October 2026, for a car with up to four passengers. Taxi fares are about 20% higher at night and at weekends, and app prices change with demand.

1. Pre-booked transfer

The most popular choice in our groups for families. A driver meets you at arrivals with your name, the price is fixed in advance, and you can request child seats. For groups of four or more, a minivan transfer often costs less per person than anything else.

2. Hire car

The Algarve is a driving holiday. The best beaches, villages and viewpoints are hard to reach by bus, and all the big rental companies have desks at Faro airport. Good news on costs: tolls on the A22 Algarve motorway were scrapped from 1 January 2025, so driving along the coast is now toll-free. Read our car rental guide for insurance, age rules and what to check at pick-up.

3. Aerobus (Vamus line 56)

The Aerobus runs from the airport straight to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos. It runs several times a day in the main season (roughly May to October) and only a handful of times, or not at all, in winter. Tickets are around €8–11 to Albufeira. Check the current timetable on the Vamus Algarve website before you rely on it, especially for late flights.

4. Local bus + regional bus

The cheapest option, but slow. The Próximo line 16 runs from the airport to Faro’s centre and bus station, where you can connect to regional buses along the coast. With suitcases and a connection to make, it’s only worth it on a tight budget.

5. Uber and Bolt

Both apps operate in the Algarve. They’re handy for short trips from the airport (Faro, Quarteira, Vilamoura) and often cheaper than a taxi. For longer runs to Albufeira or Lagos they work, but compare with a fixed-price transfer, especially in summer when prices surge. See Uber vs Bolt vs taxi.

6. Taxi

The taxi rank is outside arrivals. Taxis are metered, and for long journeys it’s worth agreeing the rough price before you set off.

Which one should you pick?

  • Family with kids: pre-booked transfer with car seats, or a hire car if you’ll explore.
  • Couple staying in one resort all week: Aerobus in summer, otherwise Uber/Bolt or a transfer.
  • Want to see the coast: hire car, no question.
  • Landing late at night: book a transfer in advance. Buses won’t be running and taxi queues can be long in summer.
