The Best Algarve Boat Trips: Benagil, Dolphins and Grottos
The best of the Algarve is seen from the water: sea caves, golden grottos, hidden beaches and dolphins playing alongside the boat. There are dozens of trips to choose from, so here are the best Algarve boat trips, where they leave from and what they cost in 2026, plus the Benagil rules you need to know.
Quick answer: for Benagil Cave, take a short boat from Portimão or Armação de Pêra (from about €20) or a guided kayak from Benagil beach. In Lagos, explore the Ponta da Piedade grottos by small boat or kayak. For wildlife, book dolphin watching (about €30–45). In the east, go island hopping in the Ria Formosa from Faro or Olhão.

1. Benagil Cave boat tours
The Algarve’s most famous trip: a boat into the cathedral-like cave with the hole in its roof. Since 2024, no one can land on the beach inside or swim into the cave, and the time boats can spend inside is limited. Boats run from several towns:
- Benagil beach: the shortest trips, just minutes to the cave.
- Portimão: cheap and frequent, often from €15–30, passing the caves of Carvoeiro on the way.
- Armação de Pêra: about 15 minutes away, from around €20, with fishermen’s boats right off the beach.
- Albufeira: from about €35, longer trips.
- Lagos: speedboats take about 25 minutes each way (1h45–2h total), from about €25.
See Benagil boat tours. Full details in our Benagil Cave guide.
2. Benagil by kayak or paddleboard
Paddling into the cave is magical, but since 2024 it’s only allowed on licensed guided tours (renting a kayak and going alone is banned in the cave area). Tours leave from Benagil beach, last 1.5–2 hours and cost about €30–40, visiting several caves along the way. Go early when the sea is calm. See Benagil kayak tours.
3. Ponta da Piedade grottos (Lagos)
Small boats from Lagos marina weave through the arches, grottos and rock stacks of Ponta da Piedade, with the skippers pointing out shapes in the rocks. About 75 minutes from around €20–25, or longer trips with snorkelling. Kayak tours are fantastic too. See Ponta da Piedade trips.
4. Dolphin watching
Common and bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen off the Algarve, and many operators work with marine biologists. Trips last 1.5–2.5 hours on fast RIBs or larger boats. Prices are about €30–35 from Albufeira and Vilamoura, and €40–45 from Lagos and Portimão. Sightings are common but never guaranteed; some trips offer a free retry. See dolphin-watching trips.
5. Albufeira coast and caves
From Albufeira marina, trips head west to Benagil and the sea caves of the central Algarve, or east along the red cliffs, with swim stops. See Albufeira boat trips.
6. Catamaran and sailing cruises
Bigger, more comfortable boats for half-day or day cruises, often with a barbecue lunch, drinks and swimming stops. Great for families and anyone worried about seasickness. Sunset cruises run from Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura. See Algarve catamaran cruises.
7. Ria Formosa island hopping
In the east, the calm lagoons of the Ria Formosa natural park are perfect for relaxed trips to car-free islands, with birdwatching (look for flamingos and spoonbills) and beach stops.
- Faro to Ilha Deserta: a ferry of about 45 minutes, around €10–12.
- Island-hopping tours from Faro or Olhão visit two to four islands, from about €40.
- Eco tours with a biologist explain the oyster beds and wildlife.

Tips
- Go in the morning: the sea is usually calmer and the light in the caves is better.
- Seasickness? Choose bigger boats or calm-water trips like the Ria Formosa, and take tablets before you board.
- Bring: sun cream, a hat, a towel, water and a dry bag or waterproof phone case.
- Weather: trips are cancelled if the sea is rough, so book with free cancellation and keep a backup day.
- Only use licensed operators, especially for Benagil, as fines are heavy and unlicensed boats are being cracked down on.
- Best season: May to October, though many trips run all year in good weather.
