Gorreana Tea Plantation, Sao Miguel
On the green north coast of São Miguel, the Gorreana tea plantation has been growing tea since the 19th century. It’s Europe’s oldest tea plantation still in production, and visiting is free: walk among the rows of tea bushes, see the old machinery at work, and taste the teas.
Quick answer: Gorreana is on the north coast of São Miguel, about 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada. The visit and tasting are free. See the factory with its historic machines, walk the trails through the plantation with ocean views, and buy green and black tea in the shop. Combine it with Furnas or Lagoa do Fogo.

What to see
- The factory: watch the tea being withered, rolled and dried in historic machines.
- The tasting: free cups of green and black tea.
- The plantation trails: walk among the tea bushes, with views down to the sea.

Nearby
