The Most Instagrammable Spots in Lisbon (and When to Go)

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Updated 2 October 2026

Lisbon is made for photos: yellow trams, tiled facades, terracotta rooftops and golden light bouncing off the river. Here are the most Instagrammable spots in the city, the newer ones the classic lists miss, and when to go to get the shot without a crowd in it.

Quick answer: the must-haves are Miradouro de Santa Luzia (morning), tram 28 in Alfama, Pink Street (early morning), the Arco da Rua Augusta, Belém Tower and the Jerónimos cloister, the MAAT roof at sunset and the Senhora do Monte viewpoint. Go at sunrise for empty streets; golden hour is the hour before sunset.

Alfama and the castle

1. Miradouro de Santa Luzia

Bougainvillea, tiled walls and Alfama’s rooftops sloping to the river. Tip: morning light is best, and frame the shot through the pergola columns.

2. Tram 28 in the narrow streets

The classic yellow tram squeezing through Alfama’s lanes. Good spots: around the Sé (cathedral) and the curves near Portas do Sol. Tip: wait for the tram coming towards you, and shoot at a low angle with a slower shutter for a sense of movement.

3. Miradouro das Portas do Sol

A wide view over Alfama to the white dome of the Pantheon. Tip: great at blue hour, when the street lights come on.

4. The Pantheon terrace

Climb to the roof terrace of the National Pantheon (€10, closed Mondays) for a bird’s-eye view of Alfama and the river, and the marble interior below. On Tuesdays and Saturdays the Feira da Ladra flea market is right outside.

Baixa and the river

5. Arco da Rua Augusta

Shoot through the arch from Rua Augusta at sunrise, or climb to the viewing deck on top (€5) for views over Praça do Comércio and the river.

6. Praça do Comércio and the Cais das Colunas

The two stone columns rising from the river steps. Tip: sunset, with the 25 de Abril bridge in the distance and the water lapping the steps.

7. Pink Street (Rua Nova do Carvalho)

The pink-painted nightlife street in Cais do Sodré, with umbrellas sometimes strung overhead. Tip: early morning for clean shots; after dark for the neon buzz.

8. The Bica street

The Bica funicular is closed in 2026, but the steep, narrow street with the river glinting at the bottom is still one of Lisbon’s most photographed views. Shoot downhill from the top.

Belém

9. Belém Tower

The 16th-century tower by the river reopened in May 2026 after restoration (€15, timed entry, closed Mondays). Tip: the best photos are from outside at low tide, when you can get close on the rocks, or at sunset.

10. Jerónimos Monastery cloister

Two storeys of lace-like Manueline stone arches. Entry to the cloister is €18; the church is free. Tip: arrive at opening time for empty arches.

11. MAAT roof

The wave-shaped museum’s roof is a free public walkway, with the 25 de Abril bridge as a backdrop. Tip: the best sunset spot in Belém.

12. Padrão dos Descobrimentos

The giant monument to the explorers, with a huge compass-rose map in the pavement in front. Go up to the top for a view straight down onto it.

13. Pastéis de Belém

The box of warm custard tarts with cinnamon is a rite of passage. See the best pastel de nata in Lisbon.

Viewpoints and hidden corners

14. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

The highest viewpoint, with the whole city laid out to the castle and the bridge. The best Lisbon sunset photo. See all the best Lisbon viewpoints.

15. Jardim do Torel

A quiet garden terrace with a view over the Baixa that most visitors never find. Lovely in the late afternoon.

16. LX Factory and Ler Devagar

Street art, industrial buildings and the bookshop with a bicycle flying above the shelves. See our Lisbon markets guide for the Sunday LX Market.

17. Cemitério dos Prazeres

A peaceful “city of the dead” of grand family tombs and cypress trees at the end of tram 28. Respectful, atmospheric photos.

18. Azulejo facades

Tiled buildings are everywhere. Look in Alfama, Mouraria, Príncipe Real and around Largo do Intendente. The National Tile Museum is closed for renovation in 2026, so check before you go.

19. Cristo Rei

Across the river in Almada, the big Christ statue’s platform gives the best view back across the bridge to Lisbon. Take the ferry to Cacilhas and a bus.

Photo tips

  • Sunrise is empty and soft; golden hour before sunset is busy but beautiful.
  • Lisbon’s light is strong and reflected off the river, so expose for the highlights.
  • Drones are heavily restricted near the airport and over the city. Don’t fly without checking the rules.
  • Watch your gear in crowded spots. See is Lisbon safe?
  • Want help? A photo tour or private photographer takes you to the best spots at the best times. See Lisbon photo tours.

Where to stay for photos

Stay in Alfama or Chiado to be on the spot for sunrise. See where to stay in Lisbon or places to stay in Alfama. Also see the most Instagrammable spots in Porto and the Algarve.
