Lisbon Street Art: Where to Find the Best Murals
Lisbon has one of the world’s most exciting street art scenes, backed by the city council’s own urban art gallery. Giant murals cover whole buildings, faces are carved into walls, and animals made of rubbish loom over the streets. Here’s where to find the best street art in Lisbon, and the artists to look for.
Quick answer: see the Crono murals on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, Vhils’ works in Alfama, Bordalo II’s giant animals made of rubbish (his famous raccoon has moved from Belém to Chelas), the walls of LX Factory, and the open-air gallery of Quinta do Mocho. The Underdogs gallery runs street art tours (from about €35).

The artists to know
Vhils (Alexandre Farto)
Lisbon’s most famous street artist, known for portraits carved and chiselled into walls. Look for an early face on Travessa das Merceeiras, behind the cathedral, and his portrait of fado singer Amália Rodrigues on Rua de São Tomé in Alfama, made in traditional Portuguese pavement stones (calçada).
Bordalo II
Creates huge animals from rubbish and scrap to highlight waste and pollution. His most famous Lisbon work, the giant raccoon, used to stand in Belém; after that building was due to be demolished, he rebuilt it as “Re-Raccoon” in Chelas in 2025. Smaller works pop up across the city.
Os Gêmeos, Blu and Sam3
Created the famous Crono murals on abandoned buildings on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, near Picoas metro. The buildings have an uncertain future, so see them while you can.
