Porto to the Algarve: Train, Bus, Car or Flight

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Updated 8 October 2026

Porto to the Algarve is one of the longest trips most visitors make in Portugal, about 550km from the Douro to the south coast. You can do it in a day by train, coach, car or plane, and the best choice depends on which Algarve town you’re heading for.

Quick answer: the direct Alfa Pendular train is the easiest way: two a day from Porto Campanhã to Faro, about 5h45, €60.40 at full fare and much less on promo. Flying takes 1h10 in the air, but airport time eats much of the saving. The bus is usually cheapest but slower, and driving takes about 5.5 hours plus roughly €50 in tolls.

By train: the direct Alfa Pendular

CP runs two direct Alfa Pendular trains a day each way between Porto Campanhã and Faro. In the timetable valid since 19 July 2026, they leave Porto at 5:40am and 2:40pm and reach Faro at 11:27am and 8:23pm. Heading north, they leave Faro at 7am and 4pm. Check times on cp.pt before you plan around them.

The trains call at Gaia, Aveiro, Coimbra-B and Lisbon (Oriente and Entrecampos), then cross the Alentejo to Tunes, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé and Faro. Seats are reserved, and there’s free Wi-Fi and a café-bar car.

  • The early train: Porto’s metro doesn’t start until about 6am, so book a taxi, Uber or Bolt to Campanhã for the 5:40am. Later on, a local train from São Bento takes about 4 minutes.
  • Staying in Gaia? Board at Vila Nova de Gaia-Devesas, five minutes after Campanhã.

Fares and discounts

The 2026 full fare from Porto to Faro is €60.40 in Turística (2nd class) and €83 in Conforto (1st class).

  • Promo fares: up to 65% off booked 8 or more days ahead, or up to 56% at 5 to 7 days, on limited seats. They’re sold online, in the CP app and at ticket machines, and usually can’t be refunded.
  • Flash sales: in CP’s October 2026 sale, Porto to Faro was €12.50 for travel from 8 to 28 October, booked at least 10 days ahead.
  • Discounts: 25% off for ages 25 and under, and half fare for over-65s (€30.50 to Faro), with ID.
  • Booking: tickets go on sale 60 days ahead, and summer Fridays and Sundays sell out.

Lagos, Portimão and the regional line

For Silves, Portimão and Lagos, change at Tunes to the Algarve regional line. The 5:40am from Porto reaches Lagos at 11:53am, and the 2:40pm at 9:17pm. Since 19 July 2026 many regional trains run straight through between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, but trains from Porto and Lisbon still need that change at Tunes for Lagos.

By bus

Coaches leave from the Terminal Intermodal de Campanhã, beside the train station. FlixBus runs the most departures, including overnight buses, to Faro, Albufeira and Lagos, with early fares from about €10. Its fastest Faro runs take about 6 hours, but 7 to 8 is more typical. Rede Expressos has a few direct coaches a day, usually about 8 hours. Some journeys change in Lisbon, so check before you buy.

The bus drops you in town: Albufeira’s terminal is far closer to the centre than its train station. See Portugal by bus.

By car

The usual route is the A1 towards Lisbon, then the A2 through the Alentejo to the toll-free A22 near Albufeira. It’s about 550km to Faro and roughly 5.5 hours without stops. As the A2 meets the coast in the middle, Lagos is about the same drive as Faro.

  • Tolls: in 2026 the full A1 to Lisbon costs €25.05 for a car and the A2 to the Algarve €23.80, so budget roughly €50 each way, depending on how your route skirts Lisbon. See Portugal tolls explained.
  • Coastal alternative: the A29, A17 and A8 via Aveiro and Leiria suit Silver Coast stops, but they’re slower and also tolled in places.
  • One-way hire: dropping a Porto car in Faro usually adds a fee. Read driving in Portugal and our car rental guide.

Hiring a car? Compare one-way prices on Discover Cars and check the drop-off fee. If you only need a car in the Algarve, it’s often cheaper to take the train and hire one there.

By plane

Ryanair is the only airline we found flying nonstop between Porto and Faro, usually with a few flights a day. The flight takes about 1h10, but with the metro to the airport, security and the onward transfer it’s 3 to 4 hours door to door. The cheapest fares include only a small under-seat bag. Other airlines, including TAP, connect via Lisbon.

Flying into Faro? Book a fixed-price pickup with Welcome Pickups, with a driver waiting at arrivals who tracks your flight. For Faro town alone, the bus or an Uber is cheaper.

Which Algarve town are you going to?

  • Faro: take the direct train, as the station is central. See things to do in Faro.
  • Albufeira: Albufeira-Ferreiras station is about 6km from town, so a coach drops you closer.
  • Lagos or Portimão: train via Tunes, or a direct FlixBus (about 7.5 hours to Lagos). Flying adds about an hour’s drive from Faro.
  • Tavira: train to Faro, then a regional train about half an hour east.
  • Vilamoura or the west coast: no station, so drive, or fly and take a transfer.

Breaking the trip

  • Coimbra: both direct trains stop at Coimbra-B, and the Metrobus runs into the centre. Two full-fare tickets cost about €72 against €60.40 through, so look for promo fares. See Coimbra.
  • Lisbon: the easiest split. Porto to Lisbon (€35.70) plus Lisbon to Faro (€26.30) costs almost the same as the through fare, with far more trains on each leg. See Lisbon to the Algarve.
  • Évora: it’s off the Porto–Faro line (trains run from Lisbon instead), so it suits a road trip. It’s European Capital of Culture in 2027. See Évora and the Alentejo.
