Porto vs the Algarve: Which to Choose?
Porto or the Algarve? One is a characterful riverside city famous for port wine and the Douro Valley. The other is Portugal’s sunniest coast, with golden cliffs and beaches. They suit very different trips. Here’s how to choose, or how to combine them.
Quick answer: choose Porto for a city break of food, wine, history and architecture, with day trips to the Douro. It’s great all year. Choose the Algarve for a beach holiday, warm sea, boat trips and resorts, ideally from May to October. With a week or more, do both: they’re linked by train (via Lisbon) or a short flight.
