Lisbon or the Algarve? How to Choose (or Do Both)
It’s one of the most common questions in our Facebook groups: should I go to Lisbon or the Algarve? One is a hilly, historic capital full of culture and food; the other is a coastline of golden cliffs and beaches. Here’s how to choose, and how to do both.
Quick answer: choose Lisbon for a city break full of history, viewpoints, food and day trips (Sintra, Cascais). Choose the Algarve for a beach holiday with boat trips, golf and family resorts. With a week or more, do both: 3 nights in Lisbon, then the 3-hour train or drive south.

Lisbon: best for
- Culture: the castle, Alfama, Belém’s monuments, museums and fado. See things to do in Lisbon.
- Food: markets, pastries and a huge restaurant scene.
- Day trips: Sintra, Cascais, Óbidos and Arrábida.
- Year-round: great in any season, especially spring and autumn.
- No car needed.
The Algarve: best for
- Beaches: some of Europe’s best. See the best Algarve beaches.
- Boat trips: Benagil and the sea caves. See Algarve boat trips.
- Families: resorts, water parks and calm beaches. See family resorts.
- Golf: see the best golf courses.
- Summer: best from May to October (the Algarve is quieter in winter).
Doing both
- Train: Lisbon to Faro takes about 3 hours, then local trains along the coast. See Lisbon to the Algarve.
- Car: about 2h30–3h, with the option to stop in Évora or the Alentejo coast.
- Flights: fly into Lisbon and home from Faro (a multi-city booking) to avoid backtracking.
- Sample week: see 7 days in Portugal.
Cost
Both are pricier in July and August. Lisbon hotels are expensive year-round; the Algarve drops a lot in winter. See how much a trip to Portugal costs.
