Portugal in Summer: Weather, Festivals and Beach Tips
Summer in Portugal means long sunny days, beach life, street parties with grilled sardines, and some of Europe’s best music festivals. It also means heat, crowds and higher prices, especially in August. Here’s how to enjoy Portugal from June to August.
Quick answer: June is the sweet spot, with the Santos Populares street festivals (Lisbon on 12–13 June, Porto on 23–24 June). July and August are hot (the Alentejo interior often tops 40°C) and busy, so head for the coast: the Algarve, Costa Vicentina or the Silver Coast. Book early, avoid the midday sun, and check wildfire warnings inland.

The weather
- Lisbon: often 28–33°C, with occasional heatwaves.
- Porto and the north: milder, around 25°C, with cooler sea breezes.
- The Alentejo and Douro: very hot, often 35–40°C or more.
- The Algarve: hot and sunny, cooled by the sea breeze.
- The sea: about 17–19°C on the west coast and 21–23°C in the Algarve.
Summer festivals
- Santo António (Lisbon, 12–13 June): street parties in Alfama with sardines, music and parades. See Alfama.
- São João (Porto, 23–24 June): the whole city parties all night, hitting each other with plastic hammers, with fireworks over the Douro.
- NOS Alive (Algés, July): one of Europe’s best music festivals, by the river near Lisbon.
- Rock in Rio Lisboa: every two years (the last was June 2026).
- Medieval fairs in Óbidos (July) and Silves (August).
- Romaria d’Agonia (Viana do Castelo, August): one of Portugal’s biggest folk festivals. See Viana.
Where to go in summer
- The beaches: see the best beaches in Portugal.
- The Algarve: see where to stay and boat trips.
- Cooler escapes: the Minho, Peneda-Gerês (river pools), the Azores and Madeira.
- River beaches: inland lakes and rivers for a cool swim.
Tips for summer
- Book early: hotels, car hire and popular tours sell out, and August is peak Portuguese holiday time.
- Beat the heat: sightsee early and late, and rest at midday.
- Wildfires: 2026 was a bad fire year inland. Check warnings, follow closures and never light fires outdoors.
- Sun protection: the sun is strong even when the breeze makes it feel cool.
- Beaches get busy on weekends near cities, so go early.
More seasons: spring, autumn and winter.
