The Sao Vicente Caves and Volcanism Centre

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Published 2 October 2026

The São Vicente Caves on Madeira’s north coast are lava tubes formed by an ancient eruption, the first volcanic caves in Portugal to open to the public. A guided walk through the tunnels, plus the volcanism centre next door, explains how the island was formed.

Quick answer: the caves are just outside São Vicente, about 45 minutes from Funchal through the mountain tunnels. Visits are guided and take about 30 to 45 minutes, plus time in the Volcanism Centre. It’s a great rainy-day option and good for kids. Combine it with Seixal and Porto Moniz. See places to stay in São Vicente.
