Vereda dos Balcoes (PR11): Madeira's Easiest Viewpoint Walk
Vereda dos Balcões, the PR11, is the shortest and gentlest of Madeira’s official trails. From the hamlet of Ribeiro Frio, a level path follows a levada through laurel forest to a viewpoint, or balcão, above a deep green valley, with the highest peaks behind. Here’s how to plan it in 2026.
Quick answer: start at Ribeiro Frio on the ER103, the mountain road from Funchal to Faial. It’s 1.5km each way on an almost flat path, and the official time is 1 hour 30 minutes return. Book a slot and pay €4.50 on SIMplifica (12 and under free). Go early, before the cloud and the coaches. Bus 801 from Funchal stops here.

The walk at a glance
- Distance: 1.5km each way, 3km return on the same path.
- Time: 1 hour 30 minutes return, the official figure.
- Height: it stays between 870m and 880m, so there’s no real climbing. Visit Madeira rates it easy.
- Status: open in the October 2026 update from IFCN, the regional forestry institute. Check again the day before, as trails close after storms.
What you see
The path follows the Levada da Serra do Faial through the Laurisilva, Madeira’s native laurel forest, listed by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage in 1999. Expect mossy laurels, ferns and endless shades of green.
The viewpoint looks down the deep valley of the Ribeira da Metade towards Faial, with the Fajã da Nogueira hydroelectric station below. On clear days you see the central mountains, including Pico do Arieiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo, and the great rock of Penha d’Águia towards the coast.
The birds
This is one of the best places to see Madeira’s forest birds. The local chaffinch is famously bold and often comes very close. Look too for the firecrest, the island’s smallest bird, and, with luck, the shy Trocaz pigeon, found only on Madeira.
You’ll see photos of chaffinches eating from people’s hands, but IFCN asks visitors not to feed wild animals, as it changes their behaviour and can make them ill. Keep your snacks in your bag.
Booking and the 2026 fee
- Fee: PR11 is an IFCN trail, so it needs a 30-minute slot on the SIMplifica portal and €4.50 for everyone over 12. Children 12 and under are free but still need a booking.
- Timing: IFCN allows about 15 minutes either side of your slot, and same-day bookings work if slots are left.
- Two trails: add the Levada do Furado and the total is €9, the same as the one-day pass.
- Refunds: only if IFCN closes the trail.
Getting to Ribeiro Frio
- By car: the ER103 climbs from Funchal via Poiso, about 40 minutes. There’s public parking, but space is tight and cars and coaches clog the road at busy times, so arrive early.
- By bus: CAM’s route 801 (Funchal to Santana, via Poiso) stops at Ribeiro Frio, as do some 850 and 875 runs. On the October 2026 timetable, weekday 801s leave Funchal at about 8:10am, 9am and 10am and take 40 to 45 minutes. Buses back pass at about 11:40am, in the early afternoon and around 6:10pm.
- Weekends: only two buses a day head back to Funchal, early morning and about 6:30pm. Check the SIGA website before you go.
No car? The bus is far cheaper than a tour for this short walk. For a guide and transport, see guided levada walks from Funchal, and check whether Balcões and the trail fee are included.
At Ribeiro Frio
The hamlet sits in a forest park with a picnic area and roadside cafés and restaurants, where trout is the local speciality. The trout farm, running since 1960, breeds rainbow trout to restock the island’s streams. Seeing the tanks costs €3 for over-12s on IFCN’s current price list. There are no facilities on the path itself.
Combining it with other walks
The Levada do Furado (PR10) also starts here, but it’s a much bigger outing: 11km one way to Portela, about 5 hours, rated moderate. Closed after a landslide in December 2025, it reopened on 14 July 2026. Arrange a taxi or pickup at Portela.
By car, catch sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, up a side road from Poiso, then stop here on the way to Santana. Above Santana, the Levada do Caldeirão Verde (PR9) is the next step up, with tunnels and a waterfall. For the big ridge hike, see Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo.
Best time to go
- Early morning: the peaks are clearest first thing, cloud often builds by late morning, and you’ll beat the tour groups.
- Season: it’s a year-round walk. Winter brings more rain and the odd closure. See the best time to visit Madeira.
What to bring
- A warm layer and a rain jacket: at nearly 900m it’s cooler and damper than Funchal.
- Shoes with grip: the path can be wet, slippery and uneven.
- Your booking saved offline, cash for the cafés, and binoculars for the birds.
With small children, a baby carrier beats a pushchair on the unpaved path. See Madeira with kids.
