Zambujeira do Mar: Cliffs, Beaches and the Fishermen's Trail

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Updated 8 October 2026

Zambujeira do Mar is a small white village on top of the cliffs at the southern end of the Alentejo coast. One main street runs down to a square on the cliff edge, with a chapel looking out to sea and a beach right below. It is quieter than Vila Nova de Milfontes and sits on the Fishermen’s Trail.

Quick answer: Zambujeira is about 2.5 hours south of Lisbon by car, between Milfontes and Odeceixe. Watch the sunset from the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar, swim at the main beach, Alteirinhos or Carvalhal, eat fish at the Entrada da Barca harbour and walk a stage of the Fishermen’s Trail. The big Sudoeste music festival has not been held since 2024.

The village

Zambujeira belongs to Odemira and lies inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. An hour is enough to walk round it.

  • Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar: a simple whitewashed chapel on the clifftop above the main beach, dedicated to Our Lady of the Sea, the village’s patron saint. The square beside it is a viewpoint and the place to be at sunset.
  • Entrada da Barca: the fishing harbour, a few kilometres north. Local boats fish with nets and traps, and there are a couple of seafood restaurants.
  • Cabo Sardão: the lighthouse further north, where white storks nest on the sea stacks. See our Costa Vicentina guide.

The beaches

Every beach here sits below high cliffs, reached by stairs, ramps or paths. The Atlantic is cold and often rough, with strong currents. In 2026 Odemira’s bathing season opened on 30 May, with lifeguards at the official beaches daily from 10am to 7pm until the end of September. Swim only between the flags.

  • Praia da Zambujeira: the main beach, right below the village. Steps lead down from the centre, and there is an easier ramp too. It has a Blue Flag and is one of Odemira’s accessible beaches, with walkways and amphibious chairs.
  • Praia dos Alteirinhos: the first beach to the south, down a wooden staircase. It is bigger and more sheltered from the wind, with no cafés on the sand. The southern end is an official naturist beach.
  • Praia do Carvalhal: a wide cove between very high cliffs, a short drive south via the village of Brejão, off the N120. It has car parks, a ramp to the sand and a Blue Flag.
  • Praia dos Machados: a wilder beach about 30 minutes on foot from the Carvalhal car park, partly on a steep path.
  • Praia do Tonel: north of the village, with a steep, rough way down. Wear walking shoes.

Walking the Fishermen’s Trail

Zambujeira is a stage end on the Fishermen’s Trail, the Rota Vicentina’s clifftop route, waymarked in both directions. Times and distances below are the official ones.

  • Almograve to Zambujeira: 21.5km, about 5 hours 50 minutes. It passes red sand cliffs, the village of Cavaleiro and the Cabo Sardão lighthouse, then drops to Entrada da Barca about 3.5km before the end at the chapel. To shorten the day, take a taxi from there.
  • Zambujeira to Odeceixe: 18.7km, about 5 hours 40 minutes, rated difficult. You pass the beaches of Alteirinhos, Carvalhal, Machados and Amália and the little harbour at Azenha do Mar, and finish above Odeceixe beach. Since September 2025 a new section with a wooden bridge replaces a stretch closed for landslide risk, and Praia da Amália is now a short detour.

The Rota Vicentina recommends walking between September and June, as summer is hot and exposed. Carry water, stay back from cliff edges and check the Rota Vicentina website for trail notices. See hiking in Portugal for more walks.

The Sudoeste festival

For years Zambujeira was best known for the Sudoeste music festival, called MEO Sudoeste for almost two decades. It began in 1997 and was held over several days in early August at Herdade da Casa Branca, just outside the village.

The last edition was in 2024. There was none in 2025, or in 2026, when the promoter, Música no Coração, could not find a sponsor. It hopes to return in 2027 for the 30th anniversary, but no dates had been announced as of October 2026. If it does come back, expect a full village and high prices that week.

Festa de Nossa Senhora do Mar

The village honours its patron saint on 15 August, also a national holiday in Portugal, with a mass and a procession through the streets. Check the programme locally. Mid-August is the busiest time on this coast, so book early.

Where to eat

Expect grilled fish such as sea bream and sardines, octopus, clams and seafood rice, plus pork and bread dishes from inland. See the Portuguese seafood guide and Alentejo food.

  • Entrada da Barca: A Barca Tranquitanas opened at the harbour in June 1974 as a canteen for the local fishermen and still works with boats from this coast. It usually closes on Mondays and in December and January.
  • Percebes: goose barnacles, gathered from the rocks along these cliffs. Harvesting them in the natural park is banned from 15 September to 15 December, so come outside those months if you want local ones.
  • In the village: cafés and casual grilled-fish places. Many close or cut their hours in winter.

Getting there

  • By car: about 210km and 2.5 hours from Lisbon, mostly on the tolled A2 motorway, then country roads. Zambujeira is about 20 minutes from Odeceixe, half an hour from Milfontes and a little over an hour from Lagos. See car rental in Portugal.
  • By bus: Rede Expressos runs direct coaches from Lisbon’s Sete Rios terminal to Avenida do Mar in the village, taking roughly three to four hours. There are only a few a day, so book ahead in summer. There is no railway on this coast. See Portugal by bus.
  • Parking: easy most of the year, but hard near the main beach in August.

Where to stay

Most places to stay are guesthouses, rooms and holiday apartments rather than big hotels. Book well ahead for July and August.

  • Camping: the Parque de Campismo da Zambujeira, near the village, is listed as open all year. Wild camping and sleeping in campervans outside campsites are not allowed in the natural park.
  • Rural stays: our Alentejo hotels guide includes a farm stay about 15 minutes’ drive from the beaches.

Where to stay: for more choice, base yourself in Vila Nova de Milfontes, about half an hour north, or Odeceixe, about 20 minutes south, and drive over for the day.
