Calheta: Madeira's Golden Beach and Art Centre
Calheta, on Madeira’s sunny southwest coast, has one of the island’s few golden sand beaches (made with imported sand and protected by breakwaters), a marina, and an excellent contemporary art centre. It’s a relaxed base for the west of the island.
Quick answer: Calheta is about 40 minutes west of Funchal. Swim at the sheltered sandy beach, visit the MUDAS contemporary art museum on the cliff, and use the town as a base for the west, including Paul da Serra, Rabaçal and the 25 Fontes levada. See places to stay in Calheta.
