Porto Hop-On Hop-Off Bus: Routes, Prices and Tips
Porto’s hills are steep, and an open-top bus is one way to see the centre, the sea at Foz and the port lodges in Gaia without climbing them. Here’s who runs the hop-on hop-off buses in 2026, what the routes cover, what tickets cost and when the cheaper Andante Tour makes more sense.
Quick answer: City Sightseeing Porto runs a red line through the centre to Foz and back along the river (about 2 hours) and a blue line to the port lodges in Gaia (about 1 hour). Tickets cost from about €28 for 24 hours or €30 for 48 hours. The Andante Tour (€7.75 for 24 hours) plus tram 1 covers similar ground for less.

Who runs the buses in 2026
The main operator is City Sightseeing Porto, with red open-top double-deckers and recorded commentary in several languages. Its booking site was selling tickets in October 2026. Yellow Bus, the big name in Lisbon, sells a six bridges cruise and day trips in Porto but listed no hop-on bus there.
The routes
Red line: the centre, Boavista and the sea
This two-hour loop runs from Batalha to the Palácio da Justiça, a short walk from Clérigos and Livraria Lello, then the Crystal Palace gardens, Casa da Música and Serralves. It reaches the sea at Castelo do Queijo, follows the coast to Foz, then returns along the river past Massarelos to the Ribeira.
In autumn 2026 the Parque da Cidade stop was out of service during roadworks on Avenida da Boavista, and the Foz stop has been closed at weekends since 18 September 2026. See Foz do Douro.
Blue line: Gaia and the port cellars
A one-hour loop from Batalha across the river to Jardim do Morro, WOW, Quinta da Boeira, the Serra do Pilar monastery and Real Companhia Velha. It saves the steep climbs between the hilltop lodges. You can switch lines at Batalha. Compare the houses in the best port cellars in Gaia.
Prices and tickets in 2026
These are City Sightseeing’s online adult prices in October 2026. Online tickets can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead.
| Option | Price | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24-hour bus | From about €28 | Red and blue lines, a walking tour and a port tasting | One busy sightseeing day |
| 48-hour bus | From about €30 | Both lines, two walking tours, a night bus tour and a port tasting | Two-day stays |
| 48-hour bus and Six Bridges cruise | From about €48 | As above, plus the 50-minute river cruise | People who want the cruise anyway |
| Andante Tour and tram 1 | €7.75, plus €6 a tram ride | 24 hours of metro and STCP buses, plus the heritage tram | Budgets and confident walkers |
The 48-hour ticket costs only about €2 more, so take it if you have two days.
Timetable and frequency
- Red line: about every 20 minutes from May to September (9:30am to about 6:30pm), and every 25 minutes from October to April (9:30am to about 5:30pm).
- Blue line: about every 30 minutes from 9:45am, last departure about 6:15pm in summer and 5:15pm in winter.
- Extras: the walking tour leaves Batalha at 3pm daily, and the night tour starts at 6pm to 9pm depending on the month.
With those waits, three or four stops a day is realistic.
Where to board
Both lines start at Praça da Batalha, about five minutes’ walk uphill from São Bento station, but you can board at any stop, including the Ribeira. Neither route lists a stop on Avenida dos Aliados or Praça da Liberdade.
Cruise passengers: City Sightseeing says its buses can’t stop at the Leixões cruise terminal, so take metro line A into town. See the Porto cruise port guide.
Combos: cruise, cellars and the tram
- Six Bridges cruise: the €48 combo adds about €18, close to the €15 to €20 the cruise costs alone, so it saves little. See the Six Bridges cruise.
- Port cellars: tickets include a free tasting at a few Gaia houses, such as Quinta da Boeira, plus 50% off the visit at Real Companhia Velha. Check the current list on your voucher.
- The tram: no Porto bus ticket we found includes the heritage trams. Budget €6 a ride, or €8 for two the same day. See Porto’s historic trams.
Is it worth it? The bus vs the Andante Tour
For most fit visitors, no. The Andante Tour (€7.75 for 24 hours, sold at Andante shops, not the machines) covers the metro and STCP buses. Bus 500 runs from Praça da Liberdade along the river through Foz, and metro line D crosses the Dom Luís I bridge to Jardim do Morro in Gaia. Add tram 1 to Foz for €6 and you have the river, the sea and the cellars for under €15.
The bus links Boavista, Serralves, the coast and the Gaia hilltops without changes, with commentary and a high, open view. With the Guindais funicular suspended since July 2026, a ride back up from the river helps. Reviews on City Sightseeing’s own site are mixed, so treat it as transport with a view.
Who it suits
- Limited mobility: the bus saves Porto’s worst climbs, but the top deck is up a staircase, so ask about boarding before you book. See accessible travel in Portugal.
- Your first day: one red loop shows how the city fits together. See Porto in one day.
- Families: it rests small legs between sights. See Porto with kids.
- Not for: old-town-only stays, where walking beats waiting.
Book ahead: many online tickets come with free cancellation, so you can wait for a dry day. Compare Porto hop-on hop-off tickets. If you’re fit and on a budget, the Andante Tour at €7.75 for 24 hours is far cheaper.
Tips
- Sit upstairs on the right on the red line: from Castelo do Queijo the sea, then the river, are on that side.
- Bring a layer: the top deck is windy by the sea.
- Skip the Porto Card: it was reported suspended in July 2026.
