Lagos vs Albufeira: Which Is Better?
Lagos and Albufeira are the two most popular bases in the Algarve, and they feel very different. Lagos is a historic town with dramatic coves and a laid-back, outdoorsy vibe. Albufeira is the region’s biggest resort, with big hotels, family facilities and famous nightlife. Here’s how to choose.
Quick answer: choose Lagos for scenery, a real town feel, kayaking and boat trips, and access to the wild west coast. Choose Albufeira for all-inclusive resorts, long sandy beaches, family entertainment and nightlife, and a shorter transfer from Faro airport (about 40 minutes, against about an hour to Lagos).

Side by side
- Atmosphere: Lagos is a historic walled town with a backpacker and surfer mix. Albufeira is a big resort with a pretty old town at its centre.
- Beaches: Lagos has golden coves at Ponta da Piedade and long Meia Praia. Albufeira has wide sandy beaches like Falésia and Oura.
- Nightlife: Lagos has lively bars. Albufeira has the Strip, the Algarve’s party central.
- Families: both work. Albufeira has more resorts with kids’ clubs and water parks nearby.
- Getting there: Albufeira is closer to Faro airport. Lagos has a train station at the end of the line.
- Day trips: Lagos is closer to Sagres and the west coast. Albufeira is central, closer to Benagil, Faro and the east.
