New Year's Eve in Portugal: Lisbon, Porto and Where to Celebrate

By the Travel Portugal Now team · Updated 8 October 2026

New Year’s Eve in Portugal is a street party. Lisbon and Porto both put on free concerts with fireworks at midnight, Madeira lights up Funchal’s bay, and almost every town in the Algarve has its own stage by the sea. Here’s where to go, what happens on the night and how to get home.

Quick answer: for a big city party, go to Praça do Comércio in Lisbon or Avenida dos Aliados in Porto. Both are free, with concerts from about 9:30pm or 10pm and fireworks at midnight. For the most famous fireworks, go to Funchal in Madeira, and for a beach party, try Albufeira. Book your room months ahead, leave glass bottles behind and plan your way home before you set out.

Lisbon: Praça do Comércio and the Tagus

Lisbon’s main party is on Praça do Comércio, also called Terreiro do Paço, the huge riverside square at the bottom of the Baixa. The city council runs it and entry is free. Expect DJs and concerts from about 9:30pm, around ten minutes of fireworks over the Tagus at midnight, then music until about 1am. For 2025/26 the rapper Plutónio headlined and the fireworks were synchronised with 250 drones. The 2026/27 line-up isn’t out yet, so check the official programme on Visit Lisboa in December.

  • Getting in: in 2025/26 the square reopened at 7:30pm after security checks, with bag searches at six entrances. Arrive by 10pm for a good spot.
  • No glass: glass bottles, including champagne, aren’t allowed in.
  • Other places to watch: the riverside towards Cais do Sodré is less packed, and viewpoints such as Graça and Senhora do Monte look down on the river. Across the Tagus, Cacilhas (Almada) usually has its own free concert and fireworks, and Parque das Nações has had fireworks over the river in recent years. See the best Lisbon viewpoints.

Getting home in Lisbon

  • Metro: don’t assume it runs all night. In 2025/26 it closed at the usual 1am, with extra trains on the Blue line (the year before, it ran until 3am). Terreiro do Paço station closed at 5pm, so use Baixa-Chiado, Rossio or Cais do Sodré. See Lisbon public transport.
  • Trains: CP added late trains in 2025/26, from Rossio to Sintra until 5am and from Cais do Sodré to Cascais until 4am. Check whether the 2026 evening replacement buses between Caxias and Cascais are still running.
  • Buses, ferries and roads: Carris night buses leave from Cais do Sodré and the river ferries add departures. The Baixa closes to traffic from about 4pm.

The takeaway alcohol rule

Since 14 February 2026, Lisbon shops and kiosks can’t sell alcohol to drink outside after 11pm from Sunday to Thursday, or after midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of a public holiday. As 1 January is a holiday, the cut-off on 31 December is midnight. Fines fall on sellers, and bars can still serve you inside or at a seated terrace table. See Lisbon nightlife.

Where to stay: a room in the Baixa or Chiado lets you walk to Praça do Comércio and back, with no need for a taxi after midnight. See places to stay in the Baixa, and book early, as New Year is one of Lisbon’s busiest weeks.

Porto: Avenida dos Aliados

Porto’s party fills the Avenida dos Aliados, the grand avenue below the City Hall. It’s free and huge: the council expected more than 100,000 people for 2025/26. That year the band Clã opened at 10pm, a multimedia fireworks show lit up the avenue at midnight, and the music carried on until after 2am. Expect a similar shape for 2026/27, but check the city council’s programme in December.

  • Metro: in 2025/26 Metro do Porto ran through the night until 6am on most lines (the Violet line to the airport stopped at about 1am). Aliados station was closed from 7pm to 5am, so use Trindade or São Bento. See Porto public transport.
  • Ribeira and Gaia: riverside restaurants in the Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia hold New Year dinners, but the fireworks are on Aliados, about 15 minutes’ walk uphill (the Guindais funicular has been suspended since July 2026).
  • Weather: Porto is often cold and wet at the end of December, so bring a waterproof. See Porto in winter.

Madeira

Funchal’s fireworks are Portugal’s most famous New Year show, launched from all around the city’s amphitheatre-shaped bay while cruise ships sound their horns. For 2026/27 the regional government plans 59 launch points, 57 in Funchal and two on Porto Santo. Bay-view rooms sell out many months ahead. See our guide to New Year’s Eve in Madeira.

The Algarve

Most Algarve town councils put on a free party. The biggest is Albufeira Carpe Nox, usually on Praia dos Pescadores, with concerts, drones, lasers and fireworks; the council reported more than 230,000 people at a recent edition. For 2026/27 the band Calema has already been confirmed for 31 December. See things to do in Albufeira.

  • Other towns: in 2025/26 there were free concerts in Lagos, Faro, Quarteira, Portimão, Tavira and Monte Gordo, among others, with fireworks in several. Programmes usually appear in December.
  • Paid galas: hotel and casino dinners ran from about €100 to over €400 per person in 2025/26. For 2026/27 the Algarve Congress Centre in Vilamoura has a Mariza concert with gala dinner from €495 per adult.
  • Albufeira rules: since May 2026, off-licences close at 11pm, bars at 3am and clubs at 5am, and a code of conduct carries fines of €300 to €1,500.
  • Weather: December is the Algarve’s wettest month. See the Algarve in winter.

Other places to celebrate

  • Cascais: in 2025/26 a 300-drone show over the bay was followed by fireworks from seven points along the coast, with free concerts in the Casino Estoril gardens and trains running until about 2am. See things to do in Cascais.
  • Central Portugal: Coimbra and Figueira da Foz both held free New Year concerts for 2025/26.
  • Óbidos: the Vila Natal Christmas village usually runs into early January, an easy day trip from Lisbon that week. See Óbidos.

Portuguese New Year traditions

  • Twelve raisins: eat 12 passas, one at each stroke of midnight, making a wish with each. Spain does the same with fresh grapes.
  • Standing on a chair: climb on a chair before midnight, then jump down on your right foot to start the year com o pé direito, on the right foot.
  • Money in hand: hold a banknote as you step down, or tuck one in your right shoe, for a prosperous year.
  • Blue underwear: new blue underwear is the classic Portuguese choice for luck. Some people pick red for love or yellow for money.
  • Noise and a toast: some families bang pots and pans to scare off bad spirits, and everyone raises a glass of espumante, Portuguese sparkling wine.

Practical tips

  • Book early: New Year is one of the busiest weeks of the winter in Lisbon, Porto, Funchal and Albufeira. Some hotels set minimum stays or add a compulsory gala dinner, so read the terms. See where to stay in Lisbon and where to stay in Porto.
  • Restaurants: many only offer a pricier fixed menu on 31 December. Book weeks ahead and eat early.
  • Crowds: pickpockets work the big parties. Keep your phone in a front pocket and agree a meeting point. See is Lisbon safe?
  • Getting home: taxis are scarce after midnight, and Uber and Bolt prices surge (surge pricing has been uncapped since September 2026). See Uber vs Bolt vs taxi.
  • 1 January: a public holiday, so many shops and museums close and transport runs a holiday timetable. See Portugal’s public holidays in 2027.
  • Weather: Lisbon nights are usually about 6 to 9°C. See Lisbon in winter.
